Description

Sam is ‘Different’!
Now that’s an interesting word.
Seems to me it’s a word that can come between us, it has the power to divide us and it can sneak into our minds and hearts and colour the way we see each other.
Journey with Sam as he fights for the freedom to discover what he is truly capable of in life. Will he find a way to be truly seen?

Special Thanks
This book has been years in the making and it would not have made it to completion without the constant support and encouragement of the students and teachers of my school, International College Hong Kong (Hong Lok Yuen). To the students who allowed me to test out my earliest versions of ‘The Turtle that Churtled’ on them- thank you. To Tyler and Sophia who repeatedly asked me about my book and where they could buy it- thank you! To the students who birthed wildly creative versions of my characters in their imaginations and shared them with me- thank you. To Charlie Beard (School leader extraordinaire) and Jennie Martin (Story-teller extraordinaire) I cannot thank you enough for believing in me and making room for this dream to come to life. Jennie your words, “We must make this happen!” echoed the cry of my heart and your persistent belief gave me courage. To Michelle Dona and Julie McInnis the first people to read my first drafts- thank you. Thank you Michelle for all the encouragement and laughs over the years. Your friendship has anchored me and given me hope in the darkest of storms. Julie, your explosion of “I love it!” written on the end of my first draft meant the world to me. To my wonderfully gifted illustrator, Summer Franz who brought my story to life. I cannot thank you enough for risking with me. This may be your first published, illustrated book but it won’t be your last. You are the humblest creative genius I know. To my dad who gave me a love of the written and spoken word, thank you. To my mum who taught me the value of hard work, persisting and always giving your best- thank you. To my siblings who read to me, argued with me, competitively played Boggle and Scrabble with me; you sharpened my wit and fueled my love for words- thank you. To my own family- my four kids, Christina, Callan, Sabay and Ella who are so wonderfully different and who have brought so much meaning to my world- I love you. Finally to Glen Lynam, the man who has stood beside me for over 30 years, thank you. Thank you for being my biggest fan, for encouraging me to keep moving and for loving me despite our many differences. Love you babe! A huge thank you to my audience- for all of you who have purchased this book, may you all ‘be truly seen’ and may you all find out what you are truly capable of accomplishing!

Dedicated to:
the children and young adults who have been and who still are in the care of ICC. International China Concern is an incredible NGO whose mission is to bring love, hope and opportunity to every disabled and abandoned child in China. It was while I was working for them and visiting the orphanages that the idea for this book first came to me. It was from these children that I learnt to see past their differences, to ‘truly see’ them individually and how they carried in their hearts, the same desires to be known, to be loved and to discover all that they were capable of becoming.

Hi, I’m Sam!

Nice to meet you!

I live here in Chuffle Town.

Everything moves really slowly here and nothing ever changes.
Hey, is my dad watching?

No? Good!

I’m not meant to be standing on two feet.
