T here was a strict structure in European society during the Middle Ages. People born into a certain class generally stayed in that class for their entire life. Hard work would not raise your status. Below the ruler, generally the king, the hierarchy was nobles, knights, clergy (religious leaders), tradesmen and peasants.

Medieval Nobles
Nobles in the Middle Ages ranked second on the hierarchical social ladder. Nobles lived distinct lifestyles, with specific tasks, expected behaviors and even styles of dress.
