I n this book, we’re going to talk about the king and the people who were in his court. So, let’s get right to it!

What Is A Court?
T he word “court” means many different things when we look at it in relationship to kings and their kingdoms. First of all, the buildings where the king was working and living may have been referred to as his “court.”

King Ferdinand

Hampton Court Palace

A lso, when he made judgments about complaints, this took place in a “court” similar to the way we think of a court of law today. For example, when the king presided over an argument and was the decision maker and issued a decree, he was said to be holding “court.”

T he king’s court evolved to include all the individuals who could potentially influence the king’s decisions. These individuals were his trusted council. His council of advisors might include close relatives, land-owning barons and lords, as well as important members of the church, such as bishops.
