Description

Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is one of the important modern American dramatists who is highly interested in society and deals with the crucial role of society directly in some of his plays. The study deals with the crucial role of society in selected plays of Arthur Miller. The word “Crucial” is used as a term to refer to the hard, serious, pressing and decisive role of society and how society oppresses man, ignores him and does not deal with him as a human being who has hopes, feelings and emotions. ABSTRACT Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is one of the important modern American dramatists who is highly interested in society and deals with the crucial role of society directly in some of his plays. Miller's plays are considered comments on and criticism of society because he believes that drama can expose the ills of society. The study deals with the crucial role of society in selected plays of Arthur Miller. The word“Crucial”is used as a term to refer to the hard, serious, pressing and decisive role of society and how society oppresses man, ignores him and does not deal with him as a human being who has hopes, feelings and emotions. The word“Crucial” is also used to refer to how society always rejects man and man cannot succeed in it. The study; moreover, attempts to show how man and society can be better and how both of them must understand their responsibilities, duties, and rights. The study is limited to four of Miller's plays:Death of a Salesman,The Crucible, All My Sons, andA View from the Bridge, because of their availability our libraries. The study falls into three chapters. Chapter One is an introduction which deals with the

American theatre, its appearance characteristics and its first dramatists. It also gives us a brief account of Miller's life, his attitudes towards life, drama, the theatre and his style in his plays. Chapter Two discusses “The American Dream”, as a concept its causes and its failure. The study explains how man can be against society inDeath of a Salesman, while inThe Cruciblethe study explains how society can be against man. Chapter Three analyses the concept of Americanism as a way of life inAll My SonsandA View from the Bridgebecause Miller believes that it is not only society that destroys man but man can also destroy the society and be self-destructive. Finally is a conclusion that sums up the main findings of the study.
