Many stories, especially folk tales and fairy tales, start with the phrase ‘Once upon a time’. It tells you the story happened in an unknown time, and that you should be ready for strange events like magic and strange creatures like dragons.
The phrase is also a clue that the story may be very old, and has been told and retold so many times that even the person telling the story is not sure if it really happened, or when. But it could also be a newer story, and the writer uses “once upon a time” to make the story sound older.
