Chapter 1
Savannah rushes to Traverse City to the Fisher Foundation. Sammy the butler had called Savannah and said, “ You need to come quickly, Mr. Fisher is not doing well and he ’ s asking for you! ” As Savannah drove all she could think about was how Mr. Fisher had turned his life around and was helping so many people now. Mr. Fisher had told her on many occasions how Sammy had pestered him. How Sammy kept after him until he listened to him and then lead him to the Lord. Mr. Fisher tells how he regrets waiting so long before giving his life to God. He says “ I know I wasted many years. Now I am sick and dying but God has given me a chance to do something good. That is why we started the Fisher Foundation and even after I am dead and buried, we can still be changing lives. ”
Savannah is remembering how she has grown to love the old man. Things change, people change, and life goes on. Mr. Fisher has been able to repair his relationship with his son. Now it sounds like the end is near. Sammy his loyal, and loving servant will be right by his side till the end. Savannah pulled off to the side of the road because of the tears that were falling down her cheeks. Back on the road she keeps praying “ Lord, please let me get there in time. ”
As Savannah pulls into the driveway, she sees the ambulance pulling out. Sammy runs up to her and tells her to get into his car, and ride with him to the hospital. On the way he explains to her that Mr. Fisher had gotten up and was coming down for breakfast. When he started to cough and was holding his chest. He started to fall to the floor when Milly, the cook grabs him and eased him down. They called 911. As he lay there, he called out for Sammy and told him to call Savannah. The hospital was only about six blocks away, but it seemed like miles. They sat waiting for the doctor to come and tell them something. Hours passed, Sammy had gone down to the cafeteria, and got coffee for them.
Finally, a nurse came into the waiting room and told them the doctor would be out to talk with them. About ten minutes later Dr. Taylor came in and explained, “ We had to perform an emergency surgery on Mr. Fisher. It seems that Mr. Fisher ’ s throat had closed, and we had to perform a tracheostomy. We will leave the tube in overnight and see how he is doing in the morning. ” Savannah asked, “ What would cause this to happen? ” Dr. Taylor told them, “ Mr. Fisher is an extremely sick man. His body is failing him. Certain organs are becoming weak and will just collapse in time. We will keep an eye on him over night. Now I would suggest we pray for him, and you folks go home, get some sleep. I ’ ll call if there ’ s any change. ”
Sleep did not come easy and morning came quickly. Savannah went and joined Sammy, and the others to help in the kitchen for breakfast. On the way to the hospital Sammy was telling how when he went to bed he prayed, and peace came over him. He feels everything is going to be fine. Savannah is thinking, I wish I had your faith. When they walk into Mr. Fisher ’ s room, here he is sitting up in bed. The tube has been removed and he was eating breakfast. It was a soft diet of oatmeal and yogurt. He looked at them and asked, “ What ’ s wrong with you two? You look like you haven ’ t slept all night. ” They looked at each other and laughed.
As Savannah headed back to the office, she was thinking a couple of months ago she would have been on the phone with Nate telling him everything that just happened. But Nate was not here for her as he used to be. When she arrived at the office, she sat in her Jeep and stared at the sign on the beautiful Victorian house. Dee and John, along with Dee ’ s husband Jim and Nate had turned the house into a great office building. The sign reads “ Bentley and Williams Investigating Services ” . When she walked in John and Dee were sitting at the conference table with files spread over. Savannah says, “ You two look deep in your thoughts. Am I interrupting? ” John tells her, “ No, have a seat and tell us what happened with Mr. Fisher. ” Savannah explained everything that happened, and how Mr. Fisher rallied around and if all goes well, he should be home tomorrow. Savannah then asks, “ What ’ s going on here? Looks like something serious. Is everything ok? ”
Dee starts telling Savannah about this older gentleman that came in the office earlier. His name was Mr. Austin, he was in his late seventies. Mr. Austin tells them his wife had just died, and he wanted them to find his daughter. It seems she went missing about ten years ago. She was fourteen years old at the time. The police searched for a couple of months, and when they could not find any leads, they closed the case. Treated as a runaway. His wife accepted it, but Mr. Austin never did. He told that his daughter was close to him and she would never hurt him like that. Nothing was missing from her room, she was saving for a car, and that money was still in her bank account. Mr. Austin explained his wife was a good woman but cold. Lacking in feelings. He said she just excepted their daughter ran away and that ended it.
John started telling, “ Once his wife died, he started thinking about the women here in town that were kidnapped. Mr. Austin said if we found those women, maybe we could find out what happened to his daughter. ” Savannah asks, “ Are we going to take the case? ” Dee tells her, “ That ’ s what we ’ re doing here, trying to decide. Ten years is a long time, evidence have all gone cold. He says he can pay, but I do not think he really has any money. I think he would be doing without to pay us. ” Savannah excitedly asks, “ What about the money Alice Brown gave us to help those who couldn ’ t pay? ” John said, “ That was one of the things we were talking about. It is just that ten years is a long time, I hate to get Mr. Austin ’ s hopes up. Let us call it a day. Think on it overnight, and we will discuss it in the morning.
Chapter 2
Dee pulls in the driveway right behind Jim, they walk up onto the porch. Dee sat on the swing Jim had installed for her and waited and while Jim went in and got Red. On his way out he got a couple of waters out of the refrigerator. They both took Red for a walk. As they walked, Dee told Jim about her day and asked him how the new man was working out. Jim told her, “ Well he ’ s not Nate, but he ’ s a good worker and seems to know what to do. I can start him on a job, and he can finish on his own. ” Dee ask him, “ You are missing Nate, aren ’ t you? You guys were good friends. Has he called you at all? ” Jim told her. “ He called last week just to ask how everything was. ” Dee questioned him farther, “ Did he ask about Savannah? What do you think happened between those two? “ Jim tells her, “ You know I can ’ t figure that out, remember he had a ring and just couldn ’ t find the right time to propose. ”
Savannah went home to the guest house that Nate ’ s father owns. The house does not feel scary now that the kidnapped women have been found, and Mr. Green in prison. She is thinking how she misses Nate spending the night to protect her from whatever was scaring her. What happened, why did Nate leave? Why would he leave everything here on the pretense of helping his mother remodel her house to sell it? She is proud of herself for not taking calls from Jeff. When she met Jeff, he was a police officer in Chicago, where she lived. Met him in church, and felt he was the answer to her dreams. After all those online dating guys. Guys that were only trying to get her money. Now Jeff is in prison for stealing money and drugs off drug busts. His partner was also convicted. Jeff kept calling and writing and making her pay his storage unit. Jeff would write her and in one letter he would chew her out using all kinds of foul language. Then the next letter was all about how much he loved her. Two months ago, she stopped paying the storage unit. Now he is really threatening her, he only has two months to go of his eighteen months sentence. She is thinking why does she not have any luck with men.
She picks up the phone and scrolls down to Nate ’ s name, but does not push the button and lays the phone down. Time for sleep.
Morning comes and John is up early, looking up the news story on Wilma Austin. Ten years is a long time. Dee and Savannah pull up to the office at the same time. Savannah says, “ Want to bet lunch that John is already at his desk. ” Dee says, “ You kidding me? You know he is there already at the computer. ”
As they walk in John says, “ Grab yourselves a cup of coffee, I have breakfast rolls in here. ” They started discussing Mr. Austin, and how they agreed to take his case and fund it through the money Alice Brown gave. John tells them they need to go to the police station and talk with Officer O ’ Malley. They discussed what little John found on the internet. Lunchtime came they went to the bakery and ordered soup and sandwiches. Over to see Officer O ’ Malley. John explains about Mr. Austin coming and asking for t
