Introduction
Herbert George Wells was born in Kent, England, in 1866. His father owned a small shop and his mother was a lady’s maid. Wells left school at the age of fourteen, but when he was eighteen years old, he won a scholarship to study science at London University.
By the time he was in his early thirties, Wells had already written the science-fiction novels that made him famous: The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898).
On 30 October, 1938 (Hallowe’en), The War of the Worlds was performed as a play on the radio in America. It included many announcements that the Martians had invaded America. Unfortunately, some people missed the first announcement which explained that this was only a play. There was great panic, especially around New York, as people tried to escape.
For the last forty years of his life, H.G. Wells was a world-famous writer. He wrote about forty novels and almost thirty non-fiction books, including the wellknown A Short History of the World . H.G. Wells died in 1946.

“Heard about the dead men from Mars, sir?” the newspaper boy asked me early one Friday morning as I stood at the garden gate.
“What do you mean?” I asked in surprise.
“They landed in a big metal cylinder this morning, sir, near the sandpits on Horsell Common,” he told me.
