The articles in this number of Romantik include new research on reverie and dream as the locus of metaphor in Percy Bysshe Shelley's Prometheus Unbound; an enquiry into the Royal Swedish Society for the Publication of Manuscripts Relating to Scandinavian History and the role it played in the construction of national memory and heritage; a discussion of Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg's and John Martin's iconographies of the sublime in the intersection between art and popular visual spectacle; archival discoveries related to the publication of medieval romance in early nineteenth-century Britain; and a reassessment of The Prelude as a formation narrative, arguing that William Wordsworth displays a conflicted attitude to the growth and progress usually found in the Bildungsroman. It has oten been noted that even durîng the heîght o the Revoutîonary and Napoeonîc Wars, whîch scarred romantîc-perîod Europe, communîtîes o art-îsts, înteectuas, natura phîosophers, and others managed to maîntaîn thrîv-îng connectîons across regîona and natîona boundarîes even as those bounda-rîes were în the process o beîng drawn and redrawn. Thîs observatîon stands at odds wîth tradîtîona notîons o the romantîc artîst as îsoated genîus and o romantîc cutura productîvîty as essentîay an întrospectîve process, or în-dîvîduas and or natîons. The varîous European countrîes may have each had theîr own versîon o romantîcîsm, but the îdea o natîonaîsm was transnatîona. The împact o works by J. W. Goethe and Water Scott or J. M. W. Turner or J. C. Dah on îterary, pîctorîa, and phîosophîca deveopments, or exampe, îs de-monstrabe, but there îs stî work to be done on the extensîve European network o correspondents, transators, and traveers, who were carrîers o romantîc cu-ture. Hence, în these days o Brexît and the threat o new ractures în Europe, the study o the romantîc perîod ofers us a tîmey remînder not ony o our common cutura herîtage but aso o the power o cutura actîvîty to transcend dîvîsîon. Academîc responses to the romantîc perîod have, o ate, încreasîngy begun to reflect thîs act. Studîes o the roe payed by oca, natîona, and înternatîona coaboratîons durîng the romantîc perîod are on the rîse. So, too, are coabora-tîve studîes – oten across natîona boundarîes – o varîous aspects o romantî-cîsm. One exampe îs the recent coectîon o essays,British Romanticism in European Perspective: Into the Eurozone(5), edîted by Steve Cark and Trîstanne Connoy, în whîch Brîtîsh romantîcîsm (îterature and art) îs not seen narrowy, as an în-suar phenomenon, but emphatîcay perspectîvîsed în terms o îts cosmopoîtan întegratîon wîthîn European cuture. Romantîc natîonaîsms, în partîcuar, have recenty been subjected to crîtîca examînatîon întended to uncover the extent to whîch varîous modes o cutura exchange were întegra to the natîon-buîdîng projects o many European coun-trîes în the ate eîghteenth and eary nîneteenth centurîes. Not east împortant în thîs process was the reatîonshîp between romantîc natîonaîsms and popuar, vernacuar tradîtîons predatîng the îdea o the natîon state. Copenhagen Unîversîty în December 5, wîth the hep o undîng rom the Carsberg Foundatîon. The conerence brought together schoars rom  coun-trîes and a varîety o dîscîpînes to învestîgate how the cutura and poîtîca cî-mate în romantîc and post-romantîc Europe set out to modernîse natîons by ran-tîcay searchîng or the tradîtîons o the past. Paradoxîcay, the egacy o the prîmîtîve, vernacuar, and oten pre-Chrîstîan past was recuperated as a means o definîng the present. Whether the aîm o recoverîng the past was orîented towards one natîon or had a wîder transnatîona scope (such as pan-Scandîna-vîanîsm or pan-Savîsm), the processes o recoverîng manuscrîpt or ora tradî-tîons took pace through an extensîve network o European connectîons. Sîm-îary, the remedîatîon o tradîtîon înto ashîonabe poetry and noves în one anguage more oten than not drew on modes în other countrîes. One nexus o agreement among the conerence deegates was the need or îndîvîdua natîona-îsms to be anaysed wîthîn a matrîx o înterockîng exchanges across borders, me-dîa, and anguages.Romantikaîms to be a orum or exacty such enquîrîes înto the dynamîcs o European romantîcîsms.

CREATING A PATRIOTIC HISTORY: HISTORICAL SOURCE-EDITING AS NATIONAL MONUMENT
[ A B S T R A C T ] ‘Kunglîga samfundet för utgîvande av handskrîfter rörande Skandînavîens hîstorîa’ [Royal socîety for the publîcatîon of manuscrîpts on Scandînavîan hîstory], a socîety dedîcated to the edîtîng and prîntîng of hîstorîcal source documents, was founded în Stockholm în 85. Earlîer research has focused upon the edîtorîal praxîs of the socîety’s publîcatîon, Handlingar rörande Skandinaviens historia.Here I focus more upon the monumental and museologîcal aspects of the socîety’s work. Vîewed as types of natîonal monument, source edîtîons from the romantîc era can tell us somethîng about how hîstory was produced and popularîsed durîng thîs perîod. The source documents prînted înHandlingarserved as educatîonal tools întended to help the reader better understand hîstory, specîfically în thîs case the hîstory of Sweden. But such edîtîons also functîoned  lîke a museum or a monu ment  as trîggers for emotîons, memory, and hîstorîcîty, and lîke those other înstîtutîons, romantîcperîod source edîtîons played a sîgnîficant role în the constructîon and negotîa tîon of natîonal memory and herîtage.¹ . . . . . . . . . On November5, a group o men gathered în the rooms o the Marsha o the Ream în the Roya Paace at Stockhom. The group was made up prîncîpay o arîstocratîc poîtîcîans, ormay ed by the Mînîster o Foreîgn Afaîrs, Count Lars von Engeström. The rest o the group consîsted o the Secretary o State Baron Gudmund Jöran Aderbeth; the awyer, poîtîcîan and chamberaîn to the ate queen dowager Axe Gabrîe Sîverstope; and the chîe chamberaîn to the ate queen dowager Baron Ado Ludvîg Stjerned. Aso present was Aderbeth’s son, Jakob Aderbeth, an aspîrîng antîquarîan and oicîa; the regîstrar at the Na-tîona Archîves (Rîksarkîvet) Oo Sunde; and the hîstorîca author and pubîcîst Per Ado Granberg.
