This inaugural issue of Romantik: Journal for the Study of Romanticisms contains seven articles that explore the connection between Romanticism and the political sphere. This topic has long been in need of redefinition. By gathering work from across disciplines with an interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scope, the topic is opened up to new perspectives of investigation. The articles in this first issue present new and exciting analyses of such diverse discourses as mythology, the fairy tale, historiography, elite culture, landscape painting, sculpture and dreaming.

The cover îllustratîon îsScene rom the Era o Norwegian Sagas( 1 ), a paîntîng by the Norwegîan artîst Knud Baade ( 1 - 1 ). The depîctîon o the lonely Vîkîng by the sea reflects the artîst’s înterest în Norse themes. It also demonstrates how he combîned such subject matters wîth one o hîs other avourîte genres, the Romantîc moonlît landscape. Thîs was a genre Baade knew well rom Dresden, where he belonged to the cîrcle o Ger- man Romantîcs that încluded Caspar Davîd Frîedrîch and the Norwegîan paînter Johan Chrîstîan Dahl, who or a perîod was Baade’s teacher. Later, Baade settled în Munîch, where hîs work became quîte popular. In 1  1 , Kîng Ludwîg I purchased one o hîs works, Phantasibild aus der norwegischen Sagazeit, or the collectîon o the Neue Pînakothek. Thîs îs very lîkely îdentîcal wîth the paîntîng îllustrated on thîs cover. It was sold în 1  1 , and was redîscovered în the collectîon o Mr. Asbjørn Lunde o New York only a ew years ago. The hîstory o the paîntîng may be saîd to reflect the receptîon hîstory o Romantîc îdeals: thrown out at the begînnîng o Modernîsm, neglected durîng large parts o the th century, only to be apprecîated agaîn în our tîme – as în the perîodîcalRomantik. ◄ CONTENT Welcome toRomantîk

On behal o the Nordîc Assocîatîon or Romantîc Studîes, we are delîghted to announce the publîcatîon o the înaugural îssue oRomantik: Journal or the Study o Romanticisms. The journal îs a natural outgrowth o a serîes o papers that the Assocîatîon has publîshed sînce1. Thîs serîes consîsted o contrîbutîons rom a num- ber o renowned Scandînavîan and înternatîonal scholars. We elt that a peer- revîewed journal would be the îdeal vehîcle to take the success o these papers a step urther. Romantik îs a multî-dîscîplînary journal dedîcated to the study o both the cultural productîons and the concept o Romantîcîsm. The artîcles range over a varîety o cultural practîces rom the perîod (c.1–1), încludîng the wrît- ten word, vîsual arts, hîstory, phîlosophy, relîgîon and theatre. The journal îs înterested în the pluralîty o European romantîcîsms, as well as the connectîons between them. We aîm to publîsh artîcles o relevance to both a Nordîc and an înternatîonal communîty. When acceptîng artîcles or the journal, we ocus on the înnovatîve- ness and presentatîon o the materîal, and we aîm to publîsh artîcles only o the hîghest academîc qualîty. Romantikpublîshed once a year. There wîll be specîal îssues on dîferent îs themes o current crîtîcal înterest. Each îssue contaîns a revîew sectîon, în whîch we draw specîal attentîon to works publîshed în the Nordîc countrîes, as well as exhîbîtîons wîth relevance to Romantîcîsm. The journal îs publîshed first as a prînted edîtîon and wîll then be avaîlable as an open access source ater a one-year embargo perîod; we hope that thîs wîll încrease the research împact o the artîcles. Thîs îssue contaîns artîcles that cover a broad range o dîscîplînes, utîlîzîng a wîde range o methodologîcal approaches. But, în stîmulatîngly dîverse ways, they all address the connectîon between Romantîcîsm and polîtîcs, whîch îs a reflectîon o the call or papers that was sent out over a year ago. It îs a partîcular pleasure to publîsh some o the cuttîng-edge research that îs carrîed out among Scandînavîan and German scholars, some o whom have had theîr artîcles trans- lated.

◄ CONTENT THE POLITICS olîtîcs OF DREAMING – FROM DIDEROT TO KEATS eamîng AND SHELLEY [ a l a n r i c h a r d S o n Dreaming, seemingly a private activity, can exhibit political and ideological dimensions. a B S t r a c t The first part o this article looks at the ideological significance, within late Enlighten ment and Romanticera culture, o the very activity o dreaming, with particular reerence to Diderot’sLe Rêve de d’AlembertNocturnal dreaming and the somnambulistic behaviors. closely associated with dreaming can and did challenge orthodox notions o the integral ] subject, o volition, o an immaterial soul, and even o the distinction between humans and animals. The second hal o the article looks at two literary dreams, rom the poetry o Shelley and Keats, considering how represented dreams can have pronounced ideological and political valences. ‘In Dreams Begîn Responsîbîlîtîes’, Delmore Schwartz’s oblîque and compact comîng o age narratîve, remaîns one o the most compellîng Amerîcan short storîes o the last century. Its coolly seductîve hold on the reader begîns wîth îts tîtle, whîch Schwartz borrowed rom an epîgraph to W. B. Yeats’s poetîc volume Responsibilities, ‘în dreams begîns responsîbîlîty’, attrîbuted by Yeats în turn to an ‘Old Play’ (). Whatever the tîtle’s ultîmate provenance, îts juxtaposîtîon o dream and responsîbîlîty înstantly sets us ponderîng: how could dreams, învol- untary, cryptîc and unpredîctable, generate anythîng lîke dutîes and oblîgatîons? The juxtaposîtîon o polîtîcs and dreamîng în thîs essay’s tîtle seeks to pro- voke a sîmîlar unsettlîng o categorîes and rethînkîng o conceptual boundarîes. What could dreamîng, perhaps our most prîvate actîvîty, have to do wîth polî- tîcs, a set o înherently socîal practîces? What mîght the polîtîcal împlîcatîons be o dreams themselves, wîth theîr strange transormatîons, theîr ramblîng story lînes, theîr seemîngly random jumps rom one îmage or event to the next? In what ollows, I wîll explore the polîtîcs o dreamîng în two dîferent but relat- ed ways. Fîrst, I wîll consîder the îdeologîcal sîgnîficance o the very actîvîty o dreamîng, as ît was newly understood and represented în late enlîghtenment and early Romantîc culture.
