Dannie has plans. She’s going to get the internship at the fancy law firm and she’s going to make something of herself. She’s even got her beanie-wearing boyfriend, Nick, supporting her. It seems like everything is going well for Dannie, until she gets a call from her mom. With a wedding to go to and a new stepbrother, can she still keep her head in the game and get the internship, or will it all be a little too much? People Dannie once trusted prove themselves to be unworthy. People Dannie once hated have started to show her a new side to them. As her world turns upside down she must find the strength to continue so that she can ace her internship interview. But how strong can any one person be and how much can she really take, before she breaks? Things between Dannie and Max are starting to heat up, but when his father stands in the way of her getting her dream job, their new-found relationship comes into jeopardy. Will Dannie be able to hold onto her job when everything is aligned against her? And, more importantly, will Max be able to keep hold of Dannie?

INSPIRING WORDS
“If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.”
- Maya Angelou
CHAPTER 1

I opened the door to my apartment and threw down the heavy laptop bag that I’d been carrying on my shoulder. It was a relief to feel its weight leave my body. My back had already been aching from the plastic chair that I had been forced to sit in at the nail bar. I tried to pull my cell phone out of my jeans pocket, but my freshly manicured nails were making it difficult. God, I thought to myself, why did I always do this? Why did I get manicures when they left me without the use of my hands for an eternity?
I managed to get a hold of my phone and pulled it out. The little LED light at the top was flashing red. I jabbed at the screen with my finger. The sound of my false nails hitting the glass filled the room and for a moment, I wondered how on earth I was going to unlock the phone if it wouldn’t respond to the nail jabbing that I was offering. I finally managed to angle my finger so its tip touched the glass and the screen lit up.
I had a voicemail from my mom. She’d called when I was getting my nails done, not that I’d heard it at the time, not that I would have answered the call if I had.
My mom and I weren’t close, and that was her fault. When I was ten my father had fallen ill, instead of looking after him, she divorced him and quickly remarried. Her second wedding didn’t last long, but it provided her with enough money in the settlement to live comfortably. She was the epitome of everything that I despised about people. She was selfish, cold and self-regarding. I avoided her when I could. I refused to spend holidays with her, for the most part; I refused to even accept her calls.
I managed to dial the number that took me to my voicemail. An automated voice told me that I’d been called and when. Even though the voice was computer generated, it sounded bored. Finally, the message started to play.
“Dannie, darling,” my mother purred in the fake British accent she’d picked up from her short stay in England. “I’ve got some most wonderful news for you. I’m getting remarried.”
She sounded happy. She sounded as though she’d just won the lottery. “I know you’re probably in class now or something, but I’m going to send the flight details to you later, so that you can come over. I think you’re really going to like this one.” She paused as if she had forgotten something. “He’s called George Linwood. Anyway, I have a hundred calls to make, baby, so I guess I’ll talk to you soon. Love you.”
The phone beeped to tell me that the message was over. The automated voice returned, asking whether I wanted to hear it again. I hung up.
“Hey, what’s with the sour puss face?” Nick asked.
I dropped my phone from my hands in fright over his appearance. My phone bounced off of the floor maybe twice. I didn’t dare look down. I could feel my stomach sinking, as I thought about all the information and class notes I had saved to it. If it was broken, I’d be screwed.
“How long have you been here?” I asked. He was lounging on the bright yellow sofa that I’d picked out at the start of the year. “Did you not think to shout ‘hey’ when you heard me come in?”
“Well, yeah. But then I saw you were on the phone, so I figured I’d wait. It’s fine, by the way,” he added, as his eyes moved over to where I assumed my phone was lying. “That crappy case you bought for it may have just been the best purchase of your life.”
I let my eyes sink to the floor. He was right. The screen that I’d seen broken into a million pieces in my imagination was fine.
I scooped up the phone quickly and glared at Nick. “That doesn’t mean you’re forgiven.”
“Forgiven for what?” he asked. “It’s not my fault you’re a wuss.”
“So I’m a wuss for jumping when I find somebody creeping around my apartment?”
“Yes, when the person creeping is your boyfriend, and your boyfriend isn’t actually creeping, because he’s sat on a bright yellow couch where you couldn’t possibly miss him.”
He was enjoying the irritation on my face. “Are you going to sit down?” He patted the couch beside where he was sitting and then rested his arm on the back of the couch.
“Yeah,” I walked over and took a seat. His arm fell from the back of the couch and draped around my shoulders.
“So, who were you on the phone to?” he asked, when my head had found the perfect spot to rest against on his shoulder. “You looked pissed when you hung up.”
“It was a voicemail.”
“Okay,” he said slowly. For a second I was sure that I could actually hear his eyes rolling. “Who left you a voicemail?”
“My mom. She’s getting married again.” There was a distinct lack of any kind of enthusiasm in my voice.
“And this is a bad thing?”
“No, it’s not a bad thing. It’s just not anything to get excited about.”
“I don’t know.” He brought his feet up to the small maple coffee table I’d had imported. “I’ve always loved a good wedding.”
I turned to look at him. He didn’t know about the friction between my mom and me. I’d never felt as though it was information that he needed to know.
Nick had a kind of dreamy look to his brown eyes that told me his mind wasn’t in the room. His dark brown hair had been pushed back by the tired looking beanie that he always wore. You wouldn’t be able to tell from looking at him that he studied at one of the top law schools in the country. He looked more like the kind of guy you’d find attached to a bong. Not that that was a bad thing. Most of the guys who went to our school looked like clones of each other.
“Oh, I’m sure the wedding will be great,” I said dryly. “She’s had plenty of practice with them.”
CHAPTER 2

I used the smallest suitcase I owned. There was something about its small size that reassured me that I wouldn’t be staying with my mom forever, and I needed that. I needed that reminder that the heavy sense of dread I’d been feeling since I’d picked up her voicemail wouldn’t actually last forever.
Of course, using the smallest suitcase that I owned came with some disadvantages. The primary disadvantage was that there wasn’t really any room to pack the things that I needed.
I’d spent hours poring over the nearly folded piles of clothes that I’d set out. I was trying to whittle them down. I was trying to find the weak clothes among the strong, so that I could reject them. I was only going to be there a week, and one of those days would be spent wearing a bridesmaid dress, so did I really need fifteen different pairs of jeans? Maybe a few, if I needed to change, but then did I really need to take five pairs of shorts too?
A sudden thought hit me. Only five pairs of shorts? What if the weather was hot? What if I needed a pair of shorts for every day other than the wedding? Five pairs of shorts wouldn’t be enough to cover that. Shit. That was the problem. I was trying to downsize, but instead, I was adding more.
A loud hollow vibrating noise came from my bedside table. I reached over and grabbed my phone. “Hello?”
“You know phones show you who’s calling right?” Nick said sarcastically.
“It’s always such a pleasure when you call. What’s up?”
“I’ve got some room left over in my suitcase. Figured you might want to use it.” I could hear him smiling down the phone. He knew what I was like. He knew how much I packed, even when I was only staying out overnight.
“This is why I love you.” I looked
