Description

Faith had thought that she was doing the right thing. She had thought that telling the police about her attacker would protect other girls from being hurt like her. That’s not quite how it worked out, though. After she told the police about her attack, the whole town had turned against her. They all thought that she was lying and that Sam was getting his life ruined by her. When she realized that she couldn't just accept defeat she went in search of the only other girl who knows the truth about Sam. Will she be able to find the girl who has spent her life running and, if she does, will she be able to bring her home?

“Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you.”
- Gayle Forman, If I Stay
CHAPTER 1

I’d never really put much thought into the American justice system until I was relying on it. I had always just kind of assumed that it worked in the way that it should. Sure, there were sometimes mistakes, but mistakes were unavoidable when humans were involved.
That belief had been naïve, though. I realized that after Danny spoke to them about what had happened to Poppy.
I really thought that his word would mean something. I really thought that him telling the truth would help, but the police barely even looked as though they were paying attention. They’d brushed him off and it hadn’t made any difference at all.
I didn’t know how to feel. The world had turned against me. My dad still hadn’t spoken to me. He refused to look at me. I felt like a ghost in our house. I woke up the morning after Danny had been to the police with a sick feeling in my stomach. I didn’t want to get up. I didn’t want to go to school. I didn’t even want to open my eyes. I just wanted to stay in bed. I wanted the world to carry on without me. I was too tired. I was too weak. I couldn’t handle what life had given me. If God had thought that I was able to deal with this challenge, then he was wrong.
I dragged my tired and aching body out of bed. I got dressed with no real interest in what I was putting on and I went downstairs. I could hear my dad in the kitchen. I thought about skipping breakfast and heading straight out the door, but then his voice broke through the calm in the house for the first time since we’d sat together at the kitchen table.
“Faith, I need to speak with you.”
I looked back at the front door. I was close to it. I could sprint over to it and be half way down the street before my dad would even know that I was gone. I didn’t do that, though. I walked into the kitchen to see what it was that he wanted to say.
“Will you sit down?” he asked me, when he turned to see me standing by the door. I did what he asked with my eyes glued on him.
“I was at the church yesterday when the police came to see me about the accusations you’ve made against that boy,” he started. “I have to say, I’m disappointed in you.”
He was disappointed in me? How was that even possible? He believed me, didn’t he? He believed his daughter? “I don’t understand.”
“I thought you were better than the lies you have told. I thought you were better than trying to point the finger of blame elsewhere when it falls on you. I’ve raised you to be better than that, Faith. If your mother were here, then she’d feel the same way.”
I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t considered the idea that my dad might not believe me. “Well, she isn’t here, is she? She’s in a place where she knows everything and she knows that I’m not lying.”
He gave me a hard look. “This has to stop, Faith. You have to go to the police and admit that you lied to them.
