“Where the hell are we going?” Melody asked, struggling to free herself from Remington’s grip. She was scared, but needed to keep talking to him. Silence scared her more than anything in this type of situation. Not that she’d been in this type of situation before she met Maverick, but silence was no good.
“Stop it. You’re not going to get away,” Remington growled as he opened the door to the car and forced her into the back seat. There was a man at the wheel she had never seen before. Remington slid in next to her and secured her wrists to the handle above the door with a pair of handcuffs.
“I don’t understand why the hell you need me now if you already killed Maverick,” Melody mumbled through short breaths as she attempted to pull her wrists out of their metal constraints. The words made her insides constrict and she felt sick. She couldn’t believe he was gone. It just didn’t seem real.
Remington snickered as the car pulled away from its parking spot. “Call it insurance.”
“Insurance? If he’s dead, why me?”
“You don’t get it, you stupid woman, do you? You figured it all out and now you’re an asset. Sorry, honey, can’t have you running back to the cops and telling them what you saw.” Remington texted something into his phone and turned his attention back to Melody.
“You still haven’t told me why you did this? Why Maverick? He gave you a job and…” Melody stopped short when she saw the evil grin appear on Remington’s face again. His eyes turned a dark black as his jaw hardened.
“You want to know why? Why I spent the last year plotting how I could take down the great Maverick Jones?”
“Yeah, I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to know.” Melody responded sarcastically
Remington,without changing expression backhanded her across the face.
“Don’t get snarky with me, little girl. I really don’t have any problem killing you and leaving you on the street. I’m trying to deploy finesse with this whole thing, but you’re making it very difficult.”
Melody’s lip was swollen and she could taste the faint metal taste of blood. Her eyes welled up with tears but she willed herself not to cry, not to show this man that she could be weak. She wondered what the hell finesse meant to a crazy killer.
Remington ran his hands through his hair. “That boyfriend of yours took something special from me.”
“He didn’t even know you until you started as his driver. How could he take something from you?” Melody tried to dab the blood from her lip with her arm, with no success. She realized there was no way she could know if what he said was true or not.
“There was this young, idealistic girl that I knew. Her entire life was set around becoming a model. And not just any model, but a Maverick Jones model.” Remington paused as the memory took over.
“Okay, what does this have to do with you?”
“That girl was my daughter.” Remington turned to look straight at Melody. “Your boyfriend was cruel and he crushed her drive, crushed her soul, destroyed her self-confidence…” Remington trailed off.
“How? He doesn’t seem like the type of guy to harm a fly.” She also didn’t know if that was really the truth, but her gut told her Maverick was mostly kind to people. First impressions aside, he was not that bad a guy.
Remington chuckled. “You don’t know him that well do you? Maverick Jones is one of the fashion industry’s most cunning designers. He tore every ounce of my daughter’s self-worth from her and replaced it with despair and darkness.
