#1

When Jimmy heard the judge pronounce his sentence, he felt like his life was being taken away. It was exactly the term that prosecutor Larry Beaumont had recommended, and when he went before the bench to make a presentencing statement, he told the judge that he knew he did something wrong, but not to ruin his whole life.

#2

Big Jim was a giant of a man, and he had the charisma to match. He had the macho magnetism that drew both men and women. He married one of those women, a raven-haired beauty named Lynn Brower, in 1956. Their son, Jimmy, was born in 1963.

#3

When he was fifteen, Jimmy began having sex with multiple girls. He was always in demand for protection as well as companionship at the wild parties hosted by Kankakee’s wealthiest kids.

#4

As high school students kept approaching Jimmy for dope, he started to wonder if it would be such a bad thing to oblige them. He began dealing drugs to pay off his rich friends, and it quickly became his life’s ambition to build a sales network.

#5

Jimmy was a drug dealer, and he was making good money. He was netting as much as $400,000 of it. He had too much cash to safely deposit in a bank, so he spent it on stupid shit that he didn’t really need.

#6

Keene tried to help his father, Big Jim, by giving him money. But every legitimate place where he sunk Jimmy’s money proved to be a dry hole. It was like he was on a treadmill.

#7

In 1992, Jimmy and his brother were arrested as they drove two vans packed with 150 pounds of pot. The arrest brought the family’s many issues to the surface. Lynn was angry at Jimmy for dragging his brother into drug dealing, and she was angry at their father for the leniency he had shown the boys.

#8

One day, Jimmy received a call from a man named Hector Gonzales, a narco trafficker in a northern-Mexican state, who told him that Nick Richards, one of his oldest friends, was in trouble. Hector asked Jimmy to save Richards. But Keene should have let Richards die. He had led Keene to Hector, but he had previously introduced him to another supplier in Phoenix who tried to kill Keene when he arrived with a cash payment.

#9

When Jimmy met with Hector, he was not about to hear him killed over the phone. He drove up to the wrought-iron entrance gates at the bottom of Hector’s mountain and announced his arrival through the intercom.

#10

When Keene visited the hacienda, he found a surreal atmosphere. The guards were so coked up, they twitched. Everyone cringed with each keening shriek that came from somewhere inside the house. Jimmy took care of Richards, and when he got him out of the organization, he never had to deal with him again.

#11

In November 1996, Jimmy was raided by the DEA, and he was charged with trafficking cocaine. It took another few weeks before they came back to arrest him and take him downtown for the media spectacle.

#12

Keene took a plea deal, believing his sentence would be based on the minimal amount of drugs found in his house. But the sentencing guidelines were increased because of the additional hearsay amounts of drugs sold by the informants.

#13

When Big Jim came to visit his son, he tried to keep up a brave front, but as soon as his son appeared in an orange jumpsuit, he would lose his composure and sob, This is the last place I wanted to see you.
