#1

The town of Rexburg, Idaho, is a Mormon stronghold. The town houses are all painted in the same muted beige tone, and the streets are lined with businesses that wink at the fact that this may not be Utah, but it is most definitely Mormon country.

#2

When the police went to check on the boy, they were told he was visiting his grandmother in Louisiana. However, the police knew that wasn’t true, as the grandmother had called them out of desperation to track down her grandson.

#3

The police were now looking for JJ Vallow, and when they went to #107, they met with Lori Vallow, who told them that her son was with one of her friends in Arizona.

#4

One of the officers, Alex Cox, spoke with Lori Vallow, who told him that her ex-husband had left no life insurance policy for her or their son, but had given everything he had to his sister.

#5

The police knocked on Lori’s door, and she told them about her son and his friend, who were in Arizona. She said they were at the movies, frozen. The police thanked her and left.

#6

The police continued to search for JJ, and when they couldn’t find him, they went to the house where he was last seen. They found food in the refrigerator and made up a story about where he was supposed to be.

#7

The conversation between Melanie Gibb and her friend Lori began to take a strange tone as Gibb tried to understand why Lori had told the police that JJ was with her in Arizona. Gibb was just worried about her friend and her son’s safety.

#8

The conversation turned to Charles Vallow’s death, and whether or not Woodcock was to blame. It quickly became a debate over LDS scripture.

#9

Gibb told her friends that she had been listening to her gut feelings, and now she was realizing that she might have been deceived by them all along. She told them that she didn’t want to be involved in any of the teachings anymore.

#10

For months, the media had portrayed the Daybells as a family who were hiding in a bunker, when in reality, they had been hiding in a condo in Princeville, Kauai. The couple had three bedrooms and a view of a resort golf course.

#11

For more than a year, Lori Vallow remained out of sight. She rarely attended her virtual court hearings, which were live-streamed to the world because of COVID-19. In a way, she remained the pretty lady on vacation forever in flip-flops and yoga pants.

#12

For months, the case stagnated. There were so many questions left unanswered, like where were JJ and Tylee. Why wouldn’t Lori tell the police. If they were being kept from the authorities, what were they being kept from.

#13

I wanted to know what Lori Vallow’s life was like off camera. What she wanted out of life, and what she was willing to do to get it.

#14

On June 9, 2020, police arrived at the Daybell house to search it. Chad was forced to stay outside while they searched. His wife, Lori, called him and asked him what to do. He told her to pray.

#15

The police arrested Chad, and when they dug at the property, they found the bones of a long-dead cat and a dog. They also unearthed the body of seven-year-old JJ Vallow, who was in red pajamas and wore black socks.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The Book of Revelation is a book of the Bible that describes the end of the world and the people who will survive it. It can be interpreted as a story of payback, a cautionary tale of ultimate punishment for failing to heed God’s word.

#2

The Book of Revelation is key to the Mormon faith, as it is entwined with their belief that society is headed toward cataclysmic events that will uproot the current social order in favor of a divine order.

#3

The Mormon faith was undeniably controversial from its earliest days. It promised people salvation and radically new ideas. When the time came for all people to be judged before God, Smith said they would receive an eternal dwelling place in one of three distinct heavenly kingdoms: the celestial, terrestrial, or telestial world.

#4

As a seer, Smith’s direct communication with God came in the form of near-constant revelations that dictated every action he told his burgeoning flock to take. These revelations became the basis for the Doctrine and Covenants, an official church text.

#5

In the late 1830s, things seemed to be calm in Missouri, but they were also around this time when the Danites were established, a paramilitary group that sought to quell dissent within the church.

#6

After the death of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young took over the leadership of the Mormon church.
