Sample Book Insights:
#1 I had grown close to Elvis’s daughter, Lisa, over the past few years. When she called me and told me that her father was dead, I was frozen with dread. I knew that Lisa needed me, so I flew home as fast as I could.
#2 When I heard the news of Elvis’s death, I was shocked and grief-stricken. I didn’t want to call anyone because I didn’t want to alert the media. I sat there in my quiet apartment, in my grief and disbelief, and began to cry.
#3 I was still crying when the news began to report on the death of Elvis Presley. I could feel his presence in the apartment, and I could remember the essence of who and what he was. He had breathed the same air as me.
#4 I began to pack, and as the candles in my apartment began to burn low, I began to consider what Elvis would want me to wear at his funeral. I knew he would have approved of me wearing a lavender dress.

#1

I had grown close to Elvis’s daughter, Lisa, over the past few years. When she called me and told me that her father was dead, I was frozen with dread. I knew that Lisa needed me, so I flew home as fast as I could.

#2

When I heard the news of Elvis’s death, I was shocked and grief-stricken. I didn’t want to call anyone because I didn’t want to alert the media. I sat there in my quiet apartment, in my grief and disbelief, and began to cry.

#3

I was still crying when the news began to report on the death of Elvis Presley. I could feel his presence in the apartment, and I could remember the essence of who and what he was. He had breathed the same air as me.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

My love for Elvis began long ago in my little Memphis girl’s heart. I declared that I would grow up to marry the man everyone in the Mississippi Delta talked about and swooned over. My parents smiled indulgently, but they didn’t believe that I would ever marry Elvis.

#2

I have a complicated relationship with my mother. We lived in dread of her anger and frustration, for her sake as much as ours. When she lost control of her emotions, things started flying. I was protective of my father, yet helpless in my ability to deflect her anger toward him.

#3

My mother was a beautiful, bright, and talented woman, but she was never able to let any of those attributes fully flower. She was always on edge, and would often become extremely angry. But she was also extremely loving and caring towards me and my brother.

#4

My childhood was typical for a Southern girl. I loved going to the movies, and I grew up on Elvis movies. I was baptized at Graham Heights Baptist Church when I was nine years old, and I always felt that God's gift to me was to anoint me with the ability to write poetry.

#5

Elvis and I had similar upbringings, as we both grew up in the South with poor but protective parents. We also both loved gospel music, and had a capacity to feel for others that was born out of our religious beliefs.

#6

I had a happy and memorable junior high and high school experience. I was voted Most Hilarious, Campus Leader, and even Homecoming Queen. I was also lucky enough to find a teacher, Nancy Crick, who continued to inspire me and develop my deep love of the English language and literature.

#7

I was recruited to enter the Miss Shelby County pageant around the time I began at Memphis State. I won the title of Miss Congeniality and the evening gown competition, and was crowned Miss Shelby County. I was also crowned Miss Mid-South.

#8

I had participated in about 20 contests by the time I finished my pageant career. I had accumulated about a dozen crowns and titles by the time I got close to a hot summer night that would change my life forever.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

I had more than a few days that changed my life, but none more than July 6, 1972. That’s when I met Bill Browder, better known by his stage name, T. G. Sheppard, who invited me to meet Elvis Presley at the Memphian Theater in Memphis.

#2

I was introduced to Elvis as Miss Tennessee Universe. He immediately fell for me, and when he saw my face, he dropped the light. Oh, excuse me, he said, his tone changing immediately to pure Southern gentleman.

#3

I remember watching Elvis in the theater, and he always had me sit next to him. He would ask me questions and make small talk, which seemed like he was trying to keep me there as long as possible.

#4

I knew who Elvis Presley was, of course, because he was famous. But beyond that, on a visceral level, I knew what was important to him, because it was also important to me.

#5

I had been looking for someone like Elvis, and I was ecstatic when I finally found him. We kissed for hours, and when the lights came on, he asked me to come to Graceland the next night and meet his father.

#6

Elvis asked my friend for my phone number, and when he called me the next day, he was very drunk. He told me he wanted to be with me, and that he couldn’t believe he had missed out on meeting me before.

#7

I went to Graceland with an Elvis calendar, hoping for an autograph. His uncle Vester took the calendar to the house, while I waited excitedly at the gate. When Vester brought it back down to me, I was convinced I had the one and only Elvis Presley’s signature in my possession.
