Preface
In this little book I have tried to illustrate for novices, with drawings and photographs, the points which the modern judge expects to find in the Kerry Blue Terrier of to-day.
In that group of dogs known as Terriers, the Kerry Blue is comparatively a new-comer to the show ring. His increasing popularity with the public is due not only to his admirable physical characteristics, but to a recognition of his great qualities as a companion and guard.
To help this public, his new friends and owners (many of them novices and new-comers, perhaps, to the show ring), I have been asked by the publishers to contribute from my experience.
I owe a sincere debt of gratitude to the following lady and gentlemen for their interesting articles on the Kerry Blue from the expert judge s point of view: Miss M. C. Green, Mr. Holland Buckley, Mr. Neville Dawson, the late Mr. Frank Butler, Mr. M. F. Morris; and Mr. J. H. F. Barlow for his article on the origin of the breed.

CHAPTER I .
A Few General Hints.
In Ireland the Kerry Blue Terrier (known as the Irish Blue Terrier) is a very old breed, probably a descendant of the Irish Wolfhound; he was known throughout the country until the middle of the last century, when he seems to have gradually disappeared, except in County Kerry. He is used as sheepdog and gundog, as guard, and for Badger killing. In fact, since 1926, no Irish Blue Terrier is entitled to be styled Champion if it does not hold a Field Trials Certificate granted at a Field Trial held under Rules and Licence of the Irish Kennel Club. These Certificates are awarded at Teastas Beag and Teastas Mor Field Trials.
In the Teastas Beag Field Trials the dogs are tried at rabbits and rats, and the judge s decision has to be based on the evidence of the natural hunting ability shown.
In the Teastas Mor Field Trials the dogs are tried on badgers, which have to be hunted in their natural earths. Certificates are awarded to dogs showing gameness in hunting, and five minutes is the minimum time the dog must be in contact, unless he draws the badger in a shorter time. Barking before establishing contact is not to disqualify a dog.
To become an Irish Champion an Irish Blue Terrier must win 15 points at shows in Green Star competition under four different judges, in addition to a Field Trials Certificate.
A dog winning his Championship in England as well becomes an International Champion. The title of International Champion is not a recognised one at the Kennel Club; it is only an honorary title to show that a dog has gained Championships in two or more countries. In the subsequent chapters, by well-known judges, will be found many interesting things about the original Kerry Blue Terrier.
The Kerry Blue Terrier has been more or less known id England for thirty years but was first shown in this country by Mrs. Casey Hewitt in 1921, when he was benched at Craft s Show. The first Challenge Certificate was allotted the breed at the Great Joint Terrier Show in 1922. Since 1921 Kerry Blues have made tremendous strides, and most of them to-day are real Terriers in make, shape, and expression.
