Author’s Preface

I feel particularly relieved that I have finally been able to make available to the public some of those thought that make me laugh so often, even when I am alone, and which have endeared my company to so many. This, I have come to believe, is the one book I was condemned to write. When I published my first novel –THE CROWN OF THORNS in 1990, the 2000 copies were all sold out within a month. I learned a few weeks later, however, that many people bought or fought to buy the books mainly because they took for granted that if I had published a book then it had to be a joke book. Although they were seriously mistaken, they, nevertheless were not totally disappointed in the novels offered entertainment of its own as well as lessons which no joke could have passed over. Life, I dare say, cannot be lived permanently on the humour lane. A good joke is the result of the effort of the entire community in which it is produced. It is also a performance. A joke is as good as the performer. Listeners would not enjoy the joke unless you enjoy it yourself. Everybody who came into contact with me during the years in which I was gathering material for this book, has had a hand in the final production consciously or unconsciously. I am therefore referring globally to all those friends of mine, high and low, rich and poor, literate or illiterate, who worked with me every evening in the laboratories of entertainment which we call THE JEAN-PAUL CORNER in Small Mankon, Ni Richard’s MIDWAY CANTEEN at Azire, Pa Allo’s LOWCOST SUPPERMARKET and Pa Alfred’s EXPERIMENTAL ALIMENTATION, T-JUNCTION, Commercial Avenue, Bamenda.
