Foreword
When Joe asked me to write the foreword to his latest quiz book, I was honoured for a couple of reasons: 1) I would have my name on the front of a book; and 2) the quality of his first book was a wonderful guide for me as a fellow quizmaster.
The Film Buff’s Quiz Book is the sequel to Joe’s first book, The Ultimate Quiz Book Guide , and I’m certain the ‘difficult second book’ will delight many. As a film aficionado (a film degree from the University of Wolverhampton will testify to this) I love a film quiz book. Doubtless it shall captivate many, much like The Godfather: Part II , rather than Speed 2: Cruise Control .
Everyone likes a good film. Films breathe life into stories and create characters which are never forgotten. It’s a favourite quiz round to many, and this book covers everything from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Toy Story , The Sound of Music to Reservoir Dogs ... and much more.
The one frustration about Joe’s books is that he attends The Crescent Inn quiz on Monday nights, so I’m unable to use any of his taxing questions against him. However, after many beers at Ilkley Bowling Club , he may not recall ever writing them!
Read, enjoy, and share the knowledge.
Tom Myers,
Quizmaster, The Crescent Inn, Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Introduction
Why are films so popular?
Films - like an exceptional TV series - provide an escape. They have the power to provoke feelings, and to rouse emotions through ambience, dialogue and settings. Take the final scene in The Shawshank Redemption ; it’s a perfect ending with no dialogue, the sun-drenched beach giving the viewer new hope in opposition to the drab, hostile environment of prison life. We sympathise with Andy Dufresne, and with the contrasting setting it’s all the more effective with the lack of discourse.
We like to be entertained. Musicals are rousing and infectious; action films are thrilling. And humour can be found in most films. Die Hard is a wonderful example of a genuine action film with frequent doses of humour. When John McClane steals a terrorist’s shoes, he wisecracks, “Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister.” And when he crawls through a narrow ventilation shaft he remarks to himself, “Now I know what a TV dinner feels like.”
And we like to be scared (a form of entertainment in itself) - the reason why rollercoasters are so popular. Scary films pump adrenaline and trigger the senses. Though you’d never wish to be in a position of the young girl in The Exorcist or be stalked by a deranged madman with a carving knife, watching the events in the safety of a cinema somehow makes seeing the images enjoyable.
People have different tastes. Comedies often involve a romantic twist - which appeals to the masses - but other films rely heavily on special effects to keep audiences interested. Similarly, a superb comedy needs no effects, violence or anything else to detract the viewer from a faultless script (1996’s Swingers is a perfect example).
This quiz book intends to appeal to film lovers. Though many questions will interest a wider audience, several will be known only to the connoisseur; some should even stump them. No matter how many times certain films are watched, there will be details that an eagle-eyed fan will overlook ( Pulp Fiction and The Shining are good examples - indeed, you could watch these over 50 times and remain surprised with unheard of facts).
The chapter categories are purposely broad for ease of reference. Whilst no one can deny, for example, that Oliver! and The Wizard of Oz are musicals, some might argue that Halloween is more suspense than horror. Certainly the jumpy camera angles, effective lighting, and creepy music crank up the suspense (and there is minimal blood), but Halloween is generally accepted to be a classic in the horror genre.
The Film Buff’s Quiz Book , like so many of your favourite films, aims to entertain. So crack open the popcorn, keep watching, and keep quizzing. If you like films, this book will be right up your street.
