Introduction
Tony Hancock was the best radio and TV comic of his era. Working with Ray Galton and Alan Simpson scripts, Tony Hancock’s star burned bright for over a decade, becoming the first British comedian to earn £1,000 a week. Hancock’s Half Hour would clear the streets as whole families tuned in to listen or watch Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock stumble through life. Behind Tony Hancock’s success, however, hid the self-destructive behaviour fuelled by alcohol, bouts of depression and violence, that culminated in him tragically taking his own life. More than 40 years after his death Hancock’s Half Hour continues to enjoy enormous widespread appeal and has become the benchmark by which all subsequent sitcoms have been judged.
This quiz book pays tribute to ‘the lad’, with 250 questions covering the cast, storylines and characters of Hancock’s Half Hour as well as Tony Hancock’s private life and career.
