Basic Timeline for Evolution
Scientists believe that the earth is 4600 million years old, and that life began at least 3000 million years ago. Just imagine that the earth was made 52 weeks or one year ago, then life began about 34 weeks ago, mammals appeared less than 2 weeks ago, and humankind has existed for only a few hours! Considering our relatively short period of existence, our huge impact on the earth s plants, animals and their habitats has been disastrous.

Animal Classifications
Did you know that there are over TEN million different kinds of life forms on our planet earth? Scientists who have tried to classify living beings in main groups are called Taxonomists-based on certain key similarities, they categorized all living beings into 5 main groups or Kingdoms. However, recently, a new classification system has been proposed. This groups living beings into 3 Superkingdoms , namely, the Prokaryotes (single-celled organisms) Archae and Eubacteria; and the Eukaryota (many-celled organisms like plants and animals).
Prokaryote comes from the Greek (pro- before ) and (karyon nut or kernel )
Eukaryota: comes from the Greek (eu- good ) and (karyon, nut or kernel ).
PLANTS

Plants are organisms which are made up of many cells, and include flowering, non-flowering and aquatic plants, ferns, trees and mosses, as well as certain species of green algae and seaweeds.
Fossils show that plants appeared on earth hundreds of millions of years ago. They have evolved and adapted to live in almost all environments-some plants such as mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants populate the land, and algae and other aquatic plants have adapted to live in freshwater and in marine environments.
Plants carry out one of the most important biological functions on earth by releasing oxygen, that we breathe, and by absorbing carbon dioxide, through the process of photosynthesis. Plants are essential for any ecosystem and are a vital link in the food chain-they provide fuel for the ecosystem, since they can harness energy directly from sunlight. All other organisms in the food chain derive energy from plants-herbivores eat plants, and carnivores eat herbivores!
Plants are also vital to the human environment-they are an important part of commerce and industry, and provide food, fuel, shelter and medicine. Today, through study and research, scientists are able to change and control plant growth and behaviour.
Like fauna, the flora of India is also wonderfully diverse. It is estimated that there are over 45, 000 species of plants and trees found in the country.
