On December 29, 1980, the Nevada State Athletic Commission held a hearing to decide whether or not Muhammad Ali would ever box again. The evidence against him was overwhelming.

Ali's attorneys tried to prevent the hearing by offering to surrender his license in Nevada, but the commission still voted to retire him. Ali began entertaining the crowd with magic tricks.

The fight in Las Vegas was stopped early by the Nevada commission, which accepted Ali’s surrender of his license, and he agreed not to apply for a license to box in the state again. But who had the power to make him stop.

Ali was interviewed by the BBC, and while he seemed in good spirits, his speech was often unintelligible. His fans were afraid that he might become a shambling wreck if he kept boxing.

In March, Ali was ready to return to the ring, this time in Honolulu. However, the Hawaiian Boxing Commission deferred his application for a license until they received written confirmation from the Nevada State Athletic Commission clarifying his status as a fighter there.

The people of Hawaii were not interested in hosting an Ali fight, and were even willing to go to great lengths to avoid it. The British Boxing Board of Control also did not want an Ali fight, and were against it.

In January, the situation with Ali became even more surreal. The rumors of him boxing in Africa began, which would never materialize. Instead, he turned his sights on Morocco.

Ali was eventually called to speak with the man, who was very close to jumping. Ali connected with him and learned that he was depressed because he couldn’t find a job and had issues with his parents.

A new friend of Ali’s, Joe Brisbon, was attempting to commit suicide by jumping off a ledge. Ali went on to save him, and Brisbon ended up staying with the Ali family.
