FOREWORD BY DANICA PATRICK
Retired racecar driver, entrepreneur, author, and speaker
I t s a good sign you are reading this now. It means you are serious about making something special happen. Whether it s a move toward a full-fledged business, or a side hustle starting to take shape, you are taking concrete action by reading this book.
Let me introduce myself. I m Danica Patrick. I m a retired racecar driver turned full-time entrepreneur. I know what it s like to have people doubt what can be accomplished. I know disappointment, and, thankfully, I also know what it s like to achieve significant milestones few believed possible in the face of uncontrollable obstacles. (Running a business can feel like that last part sometimes, too.)
I followed my childhood dream, devoting myself to racing. Over a 27-year racing career, I competed at the highest levels of a male-dominated sport, racing in both the IndyCar and NASCAR series.
So how is it I m writing the foreword to a book like this? The answer is simple (which, by the way, is what you want your elevator pitch to be): I m living proof you can follow your dreams and convert your passions into life-fulfilling, money-making ventures.
A few years ago, I felt the gravitational pull to leave professional auto racing and chase new dreams-lofty goals and dreams that were not at all about driving. Crazy scary? Yes. Satisfying to my core? Absolutely.
Before I finished my final race, the 2018 Indianapolis 500, I wrote a health and fitness book, Pretty Intense (Avery, 2017). Even though I have no professional training and didn t go to college, I mapped out the book, wrote and tested the workouts, and created recipes. I even took the photos for the book myself. I did it because I loved it.
Over the years, as I was working and competing pretty much every day for 38 weeks a year on the track, I visualized how my businesses would look. Little by little, I kept taking that next step and that next, next step, and gradually I saw myself as an entrepreneur. I developed an athleisure clothing line, Warrior by Danica Patrick, and bought land in Napa Valley that is now my vineyard, Somnium.
I realize not everyone has the resources I do, but we all have dreams. And when I started my go-kart career, believe me, we weren t wealthy. I think most of us start out as kids who want to be or do something one day. The trick is to find out what brings you joy and then create a life full of that.
A few months before my final race, and after my book was published, I had the good fortune to represent my long-time sponsor, GoDaddy, on Entrepreneur s Elevator Pitch program. I loved seeing people from all walks of life present their ideas under pressure. Some were great, some weren t; but they were all inspiring. I saw how many great business ideas there were still out there to discover in the world. I saw what really works, what s persuasive, and what not to do when pitching an idea. This book gives you all that (and more) in a practical way.
Entrepreneur Voices on Elevator Pitches draws from a diverse group of successful people including innovative founders, winning CEOs, and the professionals on the Entrepreneur team who share their experiences from both sides of the pitch process. The chapters are easy to digest. If you re like me, you might skip around a little, depending on what stage your idea is in at this moment. The people who wrote this book have lived it, breathed it, and came together to organize their experiences in a way from which we can all benefit. There s something here for anyone thinking about trying to raise capital, attract talent, or get that first, second, or third investment.
If you think about it, we have one life to live. I see no reason why we mere mortals can t transform our passions into successful, sustainable ventures. Let this book be your guide to your next step. The key is to keep taking steps. Keep pushing forward.
My pitch to you is to find something you truly believe in then dream into it, all the way! If you are truly carrying out your passion, your success is inevitable.
