ABSTRACT

This essay discusses the legitimacy of full legal acceptance of dual nationality in Cameroon. This one must be preceded by thorough migrations studies : westerners advocated dual citizenship as a tool for reducing some of the individual and social problems brought by migrations, especially the migrant workers, on their territory. Do we share the same philosophy ? Debates between opponents and proponents of multiple national bonds will ideally lead to a referendum, for both kinds of conception are presents and relevant. From which it can be deduced the rightfulness of this pioneer analysis. Besides, in most of the countries, the policy and politics of dual nationality are controversial. Policy reality in which dual nationality is tolerated in a wide range of cases contrasts with people's continued opposition in principle. It is ideology in preference to pragmatism which prompts us to dream about that phenomenon. I argue that we must discourage dual national bonds by continuing formally to oppose dual nationality. In my opinion, our nationality code is one of the most permissive in the world ; it’s high time to rethink it, especially some of its anachronisms. However, we are not ready for dual nationality, we have neither to ape whoever nor to have same outlook on our interests.
