Foreword
Business leaders have a responsibility to purposefully design and consistently live their culture – fact! It cannot be left to chance: the repercussions of a toxic and damaging culture are catastrophic to employees, customer experience, public perception and quite frankly bottom-line profitability.
The Golden Thread unpacks the science behind great organizational cultures; it shuns theory in favour of real, evidence-based tools, practices and metrics that once implemented will deliver results. Leanne’s career working for organizations of varying industries and size allow her to highlight the key challenges and opportunities as seen with her own eyes, from the front line to the board room. Her knowledge of the elements that organizations who ‘get it right’ live and breathe every day shine through this book on each and every page.
Depending on where you are at currently with your organizational culture, it can feel an insurmountable task to take on. Fear not! Leanne expertly holds your hand while navigating every twist and turn of your cultural strategy. Breaking it down into bite-size manageable actions, Leanne provides a practical blueprint for you to follow. Her passion for great organizational culture is palpable and it’s her pull-no-punches style of writing that is refreshingly challenging and thought provoking. While written with a huge dose of humour, the message is not lost; this is a real problem for many organizations and Leanne does not sugar coat any of it.
Delivered with an abundance of personality, Leanne rejects the tick-box exercises of cultural strategy seen in so many businesses today and offers simplified, humanized, proven tools to build or enhance your organization’s culture! If you are unable to have Leanne actually consult with you in your business, then this book is the next best thing.

Introduction
If you’re reading this book, then you are probably questioning whether the culture of your organization is the right one to lead your business in the direction you want it to go. To meet that purpose, this book has been written to provide you with greater context as to why culture in business is critical to organizational success.
The analogy of the golden thread is a metaphor. One that runs through each page and will provide a visual to the full span of culture. This book will provide you with tools, guidance and questions for you to review the impact of your existing culture and considerations to shape your target culture, one that improves profitability to the bottom line and to the environment you curate for your employees to thrive. When it’s a great culture you can feel it, you can see it, it’s in the eyes of everyone around you. There’s a buzz, because everyone is pulling in the same direction and results are being outperformed. When it’s not great, then the culture can be toxic – disgruntled employees who don’t want to be there, everything takes longer, politics gets in the way… it can be mind-blowingly business damaging. It will eat away at the profits, the leaders and the employees. Because of the culture, leaders will find more and more ways of hiding the spiralling costs. There is a commercial impact. Toxic cultures impact your bottom line.
But the damage of a poor culture isn’t just the spiralling costs. The impact is far greater: it’s the brand damage, the loss of customers; it’s the bitterness shared within each interaction of your employees; it’s the tears shared before a day in the office or the anxiety brought home each evening. It’s the time taken to rebuild after significant change has been imposed on your people.
And how do we know that? Well, t
