Humanity has extensively exploited natural and physical resources, since the Industrial Revolution in Europe. A geological era, now called the Anthropocene, has been coined in environmental and developmental circles, to mark the increased domination of humanity on Earth and its resources. Today, the ecological footprint on the fragile planet continues to increase. Mass industrialisation, like what China is doing and pushing for, is one of the drivers for increased urbanisation that results in increased demand for land. It is also the stimulus behind increased deforestation, overfishing, and pollution. As the fragility of the Earth increases, global bodies like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are pushing to reduce the Earth’s temperature. Human efforts to manage the problem cascade from a global to a regional, to a national, as well as to much localised scales. Missing though are nuanced contributions at national and community levels, which this book is an attempt to bridge. The nagging sense of responsibility is what this book explores under the label of “sustainability ethic”. As a case study, the book examines the use of sustainability ethic in the management of the physical, infrastructural and natural resources of Zimbabwe. This ethic is built on pillars that include participation of people (households) in their pursuit for sustainable livelihoods, appropriate technology, tools and techniques for environmental protection. It also hinges on stewardship and structures, institutions, policies and processes of governance and sustainability. There are also the aspects of ethics, laws and indigenous technical knowledge for sustainability, capacity building and education plans and programmes for sustainability and population and demographic determinants, processes and outcomes for sustainability. The book is a timely contribution to an urgent global concern and climate change debate.

Note on Contributors Abraham Rajab Matamandaholds a BSc Degree in Rural and Urban Planning and MSc in Social Ecology from the University of Zimbabwe. Currently, he is a PhD candidate in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of the Free State, South Africa. His study focuses on Applied Systems Analysis in planning with reference to urban dilemmas and emerging human settlements forms nexus. Abraham has published more than 10 articles and book chapters in national and international peer-reviewed journals that include Springer and two book chapters in Urbanisation and Its Impact on Socio- Economic Growth in Developing Regions. His research areas are urban sustainability, environmental planning and management, rural development and the planning of cities and towns. Aurthur Chivambeis a Graduate ofBSc Hons in Rural and Urban Planning, (University of Zimbabwe). His research interests include socio-economic development, project planning and management and urban and regional planning for sustainability. Barbara Chibvamushure holds Development Studiesq Master’s degree in (NUST), BSc Honours Degree in Sociology and Gender Development Studies (WUA), Diploma in Industrial Relations (UZ) and Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation (UZ). She has worked as a secretary and office management in various faculties and departments within the University of Zimbabwe. Charles Chavunduka is a senior lecturer at the Department of Rural and Urban Planning, University of Zimbabwe. Currently he is the Chairman of the Department of Rural and Urban Planning. Dr. Chavunduka is a holder of the following qualifications: PhD in Development Planning (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA) and, Masters in Business Administration, MSc Regional and Urban Planning, and BSc (Hons.) Geography, all from the University of Zimbabwe. He is a corporate member of both the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners (ZIRUP) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). After working with the Department of Physical Planning, Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing; Dr. Chavunduka worked with several international organisations, and was appointed senior lecturer in the Department of Rural and Urban Planning, University of Zimbabwe in 2017. His research interests are land reform, urban land management and policy, and decentralisation.

Charlotte Muziriis a student at the University of Zimbabwe. Currently a third year student studying BSc Honours in Rural & Urban Planning. She attended high school at Holy Cross High School. Conillious Gwatirisa is a DPhil Student (Public Health Policies) with the University of Zimbabwe’s Centre for Applied Social Sciences. Currently he is lecturing the Environment and Sustainable Development Courses at the Women’s University in Africa. He holds a MSc in Environmental Policy and Planning, a BSc in Geography and Environmental Studies, and a Diploma in Education (Geography).All were obtained from the University of Zimbabwe. Easther Chigumirais a Political Ecologist who teaches human- (PhD) environment courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Topics include social and cultural geography, political ecology, climate change, agricultural geography, environment impact assessments, environment policy and planning, natural resources, energy, society and the environment. Her current research interests are related to land and agrarian studies, the nexus of agriculture and mining, climate change and resilience, green growth and feminist political ecology Henry Gurajenaan award winning realtor. He won the IHS Alumni is International Urban Professional Youth Award 2018 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He holds a Distinction in a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Real Estate Management from the University of Zimbabwe. He was also awarded the UZ Book Price. He also graduated from the YALI Regional Leadership Centre at University of South Africa with a Certificate in Business and Entrepreneurship. Henry was also awarded a First Price in Undergraduate Humanities for Entrepreneurship at the UZ Research Week. Henry was also a Finalist in the CBZ – Youth Entrepreneurship Programme 2018 walking away with a certificate, trophy and price money. Henry has 5 years’ experience in the real estate industry. Henry doubles on the positions of Operations Officer at AHDT and Executive Director at Solinfra Zimbabwe. Innocent Chirisaa full professor at the Department of Rural & Urban is Planning, University of Zimbabwe. Currently is the deputy dean of the Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Zimbabwe and is a Research Fellow at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of the Free State, South Africa. He holds a DPhil in Social Studies, MSc (Planning), BSc Honours in Rural & Urban Planning all from the University of Zimbabwe and a post- graduate Diploma in Land Management and Informal Land Resettlement from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies, Erasmus University,

The Netherlands. His research interests are systems dynamics in urban land, regional stewardship and resilience in human habitats. Isheanesu Mpofuis a consultant at a local construction company, Ligerdom Projects. Its key services include but not limited to: town planning, draughting services, construction and project management. He holds a BSc Honours in Rural and Urban Planning. His research interests are urbanisation, densification and modernisation. Liaison Mukarwiholds a BSc Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. He is currently practicing as a Town Planner at Human Settlements Experts (Pvt) Ltd in Zimbabwe. Liaison is a freelance researcher whose researches focus on Urban Management and Governance, Environmental Design, Urban Planning Practice, Housing and Community Issues and Transport and Sustainability issues. He had published more than several journal articles and book chapters. Liaison participated in various academic researches as a research assistant. Liliosa Musiyiwa is a part time Quality Improvement Specialist at the Department of Community Medicine for CODAID project, she holds a MSc Degree in MCH and Midwifery obtained from the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Science, a BSc degree in Nursing Science from Zimbabwe Open University, a Diploma in Community Health Nursing from Parirenyatwa Post Basic School, a Diploma in Midwifery from Chitungwiza Central Hospital, a Diploma in General Nursing from Harare Central Hospital, a certificate in Family Planning from Seke North Clinic, and a certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation from University of Zimbabwe. Oripha Chimwara is a part-time lecturer at the Department of Political and Administrative Studies, University of Zimbabwe (UZ). She has been lecturing at UZ since 2016. She holds a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Political Science and a Master of Science Degree in International Relations acquired from UZ. Her Masters research focused on natural resources and conflict. She is a member of the Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA). Her main academic interests are in political science and international relations focusing on democracy and governance (elections), gender politics as well as peace and security in Africa (conflict analysis).

Paidamoyo Maud Chikandiwais a part time facilitator of Sociology at High Achievers International Academy. She holds a MSc in Development Studies from the Women’s University in Africa, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and Gender Development Studies from the same University and a Certificate in Project Management, and a Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation from the Catholic University. Shamiso Hazel Mafukuis a lecturer in the Department of Rural and Urban Planning and a DPhil Student at the University of Zimbabwe. She holds a Master of Science Degree in Construction Project Management from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ). Her research interests are peri-urban environments and sustainability, infrastructure and services planning, construction planning and management as well as urban regeneration and renewal. Solomon Muqayi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political and Administrative Studies, University of Zimbabwe. He holds a DPhil in Social Studies (International Relations), MSc (International Relations), BSc Honours in Public Administration all from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are: international relations, international political economy, politics and democracy, politics and development, and political parties. Tamirirashe Banhireis a student at the University of Zimbabwe. Currently a third year student studying BSc Honours in Rural & Urban Planning. She attended high school at Midlands Christian College where she also attained an OCR Level 1 New Clait International Certificate for IT Users in File management and e-document production and an ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence) Certificate. Tamuka Joel Mukura is a lecturer in the Department of Economics, University of Zimbabwe. He is currently pursuing a PhD (Economics) in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at the University of KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa. He holds an MSc and BSc Honours in Economics both from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in agricultural and development economics. Tatenda Z.K Chiwotaa graduate in BSc Honours in Real Estate is Management from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in sustainable real estate management.

Tsungai Mukwashiis the Programmes Director and founder of NDIRIMO Trust. She is a Disaster Management Expert with a passion for community development and poverty alleviation by building resilience in marginalised and vulnerable communities. Tsungai holds a MSc. Disaster Management (UFS), BA (Geography, Archaeology) UZ, Diploma in Marketing Management (IMM) and Certificate in Basic Counselling (UNISA).
