Description

"There are only very few reasons for you to consider quitting: First, you never had a true dream. Second, you are scared of your future because you worry too much about results. Third, you are distracted by people around you which means you lost focus. Fourth, your choice of path was wrong and you refuse to change it. And fifth, you are simply impatient that you do not want to work. When you are about to give up, just remember these words of Winston Churchill, 'Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.'" Only a fraction of the aspiring entrepreneurs show the courage to embark upon an entrepreneurial journey. An aspiring entrepreneur needs a burning desire matched with hard work to realize the dream. That 'I can and I will' spirit is necessary for entrepreneurial success. During his long career in various markets, the author has tasted miserable failures and enjoyed great successes. He makes examples of his own naivety as lessons to the readers. As one draws inspiration from the successes of others, there are lessons to learn from failures. The author has quoted several success stories to deliver the message - 'It Is You'.

B Nair, author of Vision 10 Mission 90 , has been an entrepreneur. He has to his credit three start-ups established at different times during his long career in the financial services sector. He was CEO, director and an investor. Earlier, starting his career as a trainee in a multinational company, he had steadily climbed to senior positions and managed operations in different countries. He alternates his residence between India and Australia.
During the roller coaster journey of over fifty years of my professional life, I have worked long hours, holidays not excluded, and set on business travels with little or no notice. I have made high and sometimes unreasonable demands on Santha, my wife of forty years, to facilitate such an idiosyncratic life. Rain or shine, Santha stood by me, giving me all the support I needed for my professional as well as personal life and took complete responsibility of bringing up our two sons. Thank you, Santha.

I have made reference to a large number of successful personalities not only in enterprise development, but also in sports, literature, film world, management etc. and quoted many such persons in this book. These are people who have great minds, turned ideas into great enterprises and set examples for others. I greatly respect them. I have mentioned them or quoted them for the benefit of the young readers who can do their own research on these titans from their works and the innumerable websites and publications to draw great inspiration.
Preface
In the village where I grew up, ‘business’ was not a respectable word in those days. Children were constantly ‘brainwashed’ to become doctors, engineers or civil servants and in the worst scenario, seek jobs elsewhere. It took years before I gathered the courage to enter the world of enterprise and experience its amazing wholesome effects.
Enterprise is fundamentally the same everywhere, but the execution program is defined by geographies and cultures. The three start-ups, I was involved in, were in the third world countries, but I have tried to be neutral in my exposition but for offering brief insights into a few bizarre experiences. I have adduced inspirational accounts of start-ups from a wide spectrum covering technology to petrochemicals to waste management to infant’s educational tool to pet’s medicine.
VISION 10 MISSION 90 is meant to provoke the young minds to turn their aspirations and talents into business enterprises. A great vision will remain a vision in the minds or on the papers until it is transformed into an enterprise by hard work, perseverance and timeliness.
Mundane matters such as company registration, balance sheet, insurance, obligation to the community etc., are deliberately added to remind the readers that these areas are important components and not to be overlooked. I have come across intelligent entrepreneurs fretting on such matters at the eleventh hour when the regulators ask for projections.
With the great success stories starting from the present time enterprise icons Bill Gates and others, young people seem to be obsessed with ‘.com’ ventures and software enterprises. All the traditional areas are still relevant and offer opportunities. However, some of the aspirants lose sight of these enormous opportunities. In this book, I have analysed the attributes of some of the makers of the success stories and one can see that there are opportunities from everyday life. The stories of failures will act as signals of caution on the road of your entrepreneurial journey. The hidden embers should be retrieved out of the ashes to convert them into powerful flames and every entrepreneur would pass through this process. I will feel gratified if one aspiring entrepreneur is inspired by this book.
Chapter 1
The vast expanse of the ocean in front of you is like a glass sheet. It is wide, stretching to all directions and touching the horizon. The water is clear blue-green which has a reflection of the sky inlaid on the surface and it beckons you to take a plunge. Deep down under, there are mountains of corals and dangerous sharks. If a storm hits, the tempestuous waves will turn the ocean into a boiling cauldron.
The commonalities between the ocean and the world of entrepreneurship are striking. Both appear calm and beckoning. Both have uncertainties embedded. In ancient times, it was the spirit of adventure that propelled people to explore unknown lands afar and build ‘new worlds’. It was the insatiable craving for the ‘new’ that made people take risks and find success. During the immediate past and the living present, the human enterprise has been continuously improving lives on our planet. Entrepreneurship may have started when the first man on earth found that everything around him could be converted to his advantage. Luckily for us, it is still relevant.
We can trace and attribute every progress through the centuries - be it a kingdom or a revolution, culture or art, ship or airplane, computer or software - to this spirit of adventure and craving for the ‘new’. When great minds turn their ideas into products, entrepreneurship takes root and we make tremendous progress benefitting from them. Today, the start-up is a subject of study at the university and several governments set aside enormous funds to promote start-up ventures.
The ocean is still vast and unexplored. The world of entrepreneurship will never meet its boundaries. Doubting Toms have no place in the world of entrepreneurs. An entrepreneur needs the spirit of an explorer, the grit of a soldier and understands human values.
The indomitable quest for the ‘new’ is a relentless struggle. Tsunamis will hit, sharks and foxes will do their rounds and atomic weapons may be unleashed but the human race will still be there making tremendous progress and creating new things. The brave and the smart will explore new entrepreneurial territories with determination but with eyes open. With missionary zeal and hard work, they will achieve unbelievable feats creating new things propelling progress for themselves and the community.
Chapter 2
Multi-billionaire, 87-year-old Leonard Lauder is a true visionary:
“A visionary is someone who can see the future, or thinks he sees the future. In my case, I use it and it comes out right. That doesn’t come from daydreams or dreams, but it comes from knowing the market and knowing the world and knowing people really well and knowing where they’re going to be tomorrow.”
Lauder should know. He was the long serving CEO of Estee Lauder Companies and is currently, its Chairman Emeritus. Estee Lauder is the world’s third largest cosmetics company.
An entrepreneur imagines the future; he dreams what he would like to achieve and the dream dares him to explore and challenge. A visionary entrepreneur is a game changer. He gives the world something new. In short, he is a change agent. Like how Jeff Bezos changed the way you do shopping. Like he changed the way you go to a library for your favourite books. He simply removed the inconvenience and the cost of your going to the library; he brought the library on to your palm.
The vision of an entrepreneur is very personal to him. It is his vision that he converts into a plan or a program. He gives it a shape, creates platforms, and makes it practical. The conversion of a dream or vision into an actionable program is entrepreneurship. For this, he uses innovation and creativity.
Author, actor, and media pundit Germany Kent says:
“Start today creating a vision for yourself, your life, and your career. Bounce back from adversity and create what you want, rebuild, and rebrand. Tell yourself it’s possible along the way, have patience, and maintain peace with yourself during the process.” 1
Some entrepreneurs are capable of creating audacious and disruptive visions. Elon Musk’s current vision is to create human settlements in one of the other planets. This is a vision some would consider outrageous, but a vision is never normal. As we can see, he is not just dreaming. He is envisioning the result. He is already taking actionable steps towards achieving his vision.
An entrepreneur’s vision has no boundaries. It is essentially futuristic. It is out of the norms. A visionary mind creates a new world which only he can see. When the vision is matched wi
