INTRODUCTION
M y husband and I spent one year of our marriage in Florida. After finishing up his medical residency, John decided to pursue specialized training. Since this fellowship would take one year to complete, we determined there was no better place to live for a year than in the Sunshine State. So, we packed up all our belongings in a 6 12 mobile storage unit, loaded up the kids, and caught a train down to Florida.
The best part about living in Florida is that it feels like you are perpetually on vacation. Every day is perfectly sunny and warm, palm trees greet you every single morning, and the beautiful, sandy beach is just minutes away. It is a tropical slice of paradise.
Because we moved to Florida from the East Coast, we noticed something about this new domain very quickly: There were no seasons. The temperature just went from hot, to hotter, to excruciatingly hot, and back to hotter again. There was no such thing as the changing of the weather from one month to another. Day after day, everything looked and felt pretty much the same.
In the beginning of our time in Florida, this lack of variety in the weather felt incredible. Who needs seasons when every single day is sunny and warm, with the salty sea breeze blowing against your face? It was perfect. And we were going to enjoy every minute of it! But right around October, things started to get weird. My pumpkin spice latte just didn t feel the same stepping out into 94-degree weather, with a wave of hot air blowing against my face. I found myself missing the changing of the temperature, my fall wardrobe, and the beautiful colors of autumn.
By December, this permanent state of hot and sunny was starting to feel redundant. Turning on the radio to Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! while we were driving to the beach felt like a big joke. Putting up our Christmas tree and then stringing the lights outside in shorts and a T-shirt didn t feel as festive as usual. We were trying to convince ourselves that Christmas was coming, but it felt more like the Fourth of July.
Don t get me wrong-Floridians really do try their best to mimic the seasons. They get their boots, hats, and gloves on when it is 78 degrees outside on a brisk night. They decorate for Christmas with more lights, reindeer, and blow-up snowmen than anywhere I ve ever seen. They even have snow machines blowing snowflake-like soapsuds from the palm treetops all through December. They really do try. But at the end of the day, there s no replicating the awe-inspiring experience of passing through the seasons.
