Chapter 1: The Basics Prince Harry, grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and sixth in line to the throne at the time of writing, was born on the 15 th September 1984. He is the youngest son of Prince Charles, the current heir to the throne, and Princess Diana, who tragically died in a car crash in 1997 when Harry was just twelve years old. Harry is the brother of Prince William, who will be the king of the UK after his father’s reign. Meghan Markle is a former American actress who was born in Los Angeles, California, on the 4 th August 1981. She was raised in Los Angeles by her mother Doria, a social worker, and her father Thomas, a now-retired lighting director for the TV industry. Although her parents divorced when she was just six years old, Meghan has remained close to them both throughout her life. Harry and Meghan were married on the 19 th May 2018 at the six-hundred year-old St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Whereas many Royal Weddings over the last thousand years have taken place in large venues such as Westminster Abbey (which can hold over eight thousand people with seating installed), St George’s Chapel is a much more intimate setting, with a capacity of around eight hundred. Before being introduced to each other by a mutual friend, neither Harry nor Meghan knew much about each other; Harry had not seen any shows in which Meghan had acted, and she was not particularly well-up on the structure of the British Royal family. When it comes to any wedding, what we all want to know about is the dress. On this particular royal occasion, Meghan’s stunning outfit was provided by Israeli designer Inbal Dror, who had been working with what must have been such a limiting budget of half a million pounds to design the unique and beautiful creation. With Harry being a royal and Meghan being an actress, it’s perhaps not surprising to find out that certain key moments in their relationship played out just like a Hollywood film. One of these was the moment Harry popped the question. Doing things the traditional way, he bent down on one knee, and began to talk... but before he’d even finished, Meghan burst out with the words “Can I say yes now?!”. So what you really want to know about the proposal is where were they when it took place? With a couple of jet-setters like Meghan and Harry, surely it would be in one of the most beautiful or romantic places on earth. Atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris, perhaps... or on the shore of Lake Como maybe? How about being in a Gondola for two on the canals of Venice, or sitting on a bench in Sydney Harbour with a view of both the bridge and the Opera House? It was, in fact, none of these. Harry proposed to Meghan at home, half way through the process of cooking a chicken! It might sound rather odd, but it does actually make sense. A royal finds it extremely hard to dine out, as the press are always following them. So Harry and Meghan got to know each other so well because they stayed in and cooked together rather than meeting up at restaurants and nightclubs... so considering how their relationship strengthened, there’s a good reason for the proposal having been made when and where it was! Although Meghan has broken much of the traditional mould a royal bride would traditionally have fit into - more about that later - she did decide to follow the norm, and retire from the job she held prior to the marriage. In her case this meant an end to her acting career, which will leave a number of fans disappointed. However, she certainly isn’t retiring from the public eye. Her new status allows her an even greater platform from which to bring attention to various causes close to her heart, and there is no doubt that over the years she will be doing an amazing amount of work for charity. Having said this, when asked what Meghan would do with her new platform, Harry joked “sing”! When Harry was asked what his mother would have thought of Meghan, it was surely a question that brought up a great deal of emotion, but Harry coped well, giving a perfect answer. He said the two would have been ‘thick as thieves’ and ‘best friends’... however he also made the point that it was times like the wedding at which he misses his mother the most, although he knows she still watches over him. Like many famous people, Meghan Markle isn’t actually Meghan’s real name! She was actually born Rachel Meghan Markle, but when she began to obtain roles in the entertainment industry she decided to use her middle name. We wonder which of these Harry uses more often!
