Description

Rapid advances in the field of oncology have made the diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors more and more complex, therefore requiring equally advanced training and expertise. Early detection and specialized care can have a profound impact on the final outcome, so it is crucial to manage them appropriately. In this 7th volume of the 'ESASO Course Series', the focus is on ocular tumors, including diagnosis and management. With a strong emphasis on diagnostic aspects, chapters cover and illustrate a variety of intraocular tumors, such as retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma, encountered in children and adults. This book includes contributions by renowned experts from Europe and the United States. It is a valuable resource for primary care ophthalmologists as well as residents and fellows in the field of ophthalmology.

Preface
Intraocular tumors are uncommon and diverse. With the rapid advances in the field of oncology, the diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors have become complex, requiring advanced training and expertise. Nevertheless, many patients are encountered in general ophthalmic clinics, wherein prompt recognition and referral to a specialized center have a profound impact on the final outcome. Therefore, access to a reliable and easy-to-use ‘tumor book’ seems essential.
With this is in mind, we have edited contributions authored by well-recognized experts from Europe and the United States. The book is designed primarily to serve as a supplement to a teaching course conducted at the European School of Advanced Ophthalmic Studies (ESASO, Lugano, Switzerland). The 11 easy-to-read chapters, covering a variety of intraocular tumors encountered in children and adults, are well illustrated, with emphasis on diagnostic aspects.
We are grateful to Borja Corcóstegui, MD, and Giuseppe Guarnaccia, MD, for inviting us to conduct the Intraocular Tumors Course as part of the ESASO courses and to Sandra Braun (Karger Publishers) and Francesco Bandello, MD (Series Editor), for publishing the ‘tumor book’.
We hope that the ‘tumor book’ will become an important resource for residents and fellows as well as general ophthalmologists. It is our sincere hope that readers will have as much pleasure reading this ‘tumor book’ as we had writing and editing it.

Abstract
This chapter highlights examination techniques that are specific for assessment of a patient with an intraocular tumor. It is assumed that a full ophthalmic and systemic history is obtained for all patients in addition to complete examination of both eyes. Usual methods of ophthalmic examination, such as external examination, slit-lamp examination (including gonioscopy), and indirect ophthalmoscopy, can be adapted to assess important aspects of the tumor that provide clues to the correct diagnosis and management approach. Pertinent fundus findings may be documented by drawings and supplemented by ancillary investigations such as autofluorescence imaging, optical coherence tomography, angiography, and ultrasonography.
