Preface
The content in this Study Guide is a companion text to the Core Curriculum for Oncology Nursing , Fifth Edition. Each chapter in this new edition has a corresponding chapter in that text, reflecting content updates in the practice of oncology nursing since the previous edition. Among the changes, you will notice totally new chapters with content that is critical to our work. Both texts have used the OCN ® Test Blueprint established in 2013 for versions of the examination through 2017 to organize the framework and material provided.
This is the only study guide that accompanies the Core Curriculum for Oncology Nursing, Fifth Edition, and is created in conjunction with the Oncology Nursing Society. This user-friendly guide will serve nurses who are preparing to make that professional commitment and take the OCN ® Examination.
In addition, the use of this Study Guide and corresponding text can guide the development of an educational plan to enhance the knowledge and understanding of nurses as individuals and groups providing care for people with cancer and their family members. This process addresses the recommendation in the 2013 Institute of Medicine report, Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis, that all individuals caring for cancer patients should have appropriate core competencies. An emphasis on QSEN competencies is designed to reduce errors in oncology nursing practice with a focus on safety and evidence-based practice. Safety-related content has been highlighted through new Safety Alert icons.
