W hen we feel sick, or get an infection, we sometimes need help to get better. Medicine comes to our aid! Read on and find out more about the medicines we might need to take.

What is medicine?
M edicine is something that you take to help you get better when you are not well, or to keep you from getting sick in the first place. Medicines can be all different colors, and can come as liquids or pills or mist that we breathe.

S ome medicines are substances that occur in nature, and that people discovered long ago help with one problem or another. Other medicines are quite new, created in laboratories to solve a problem. Some of the things that make us sick, like the influenza virus, keep evolving, so we keep having to make new medicines to keep people from getting the flu. The Baby Professor book I’ve Got the Flu! has more information about influenza.

Safe medicine
T he people who make medicines test them carefully before making them available for use, and in many countries the government health department has to approve them. The system almost always works well, although there have been some sad situations where a medicine caused unexpected problems for the people who took it.

F or some medicines you need a prescription: a doctor has to write a document that tells the pharmacist to let you have a certain medicine, in what dosage, and for use over how much time. Then you take the note to the pharmacy and get the medicine.
