Preface
At the request of the Standing Commission on Church Music this author prepared A MANUAL FOR CLERGY AND CHURCH MUSICIANS . His manuscript was reviewed and edited and accepted by the Commission as the consensus of its members. It became available in published form in January 1981. By the time that the manual came into print THE BOOK OF OCCASIONAL SERVICES had been approved by General Convention and published. Since that time THE HYMNAL 1982 has been approved by Convention and published, and various supplemental music resources and the first eight volumes of the Church Hymnal Corporation s HYMNAL STUDIES series have become available. The publication of THE HYMNAL 1982 and of supplementary resources necessitated extensive revision of the original text. The publication of THE BOOK OF OCCASIONAL SERVICES called for substantial expansion of the text and for the provision of a number of additional check lists for planning the services provided in that book.
In addition to revisions and additions called for by the availability of these new works, the text and the check lists for planning services have been substantially revised for the purpose of clarification. Check lists have been added for Rite III Eucharist, Marriage, and Burial. Two new Appendixes have been added: APPENDIX I : Descants, Fauxbourdons, Varied Harmonizations, Varied Accompaniments, Suggested Alternative Treatments of Hymns, and Hymns Scored for Other Instruments in THE HYMNAL 1982, and APPENDIX II : Metrical Index of Tunes in THE HYMNAL 1982 with the First Lines of the Texts. It is hoped that these revisions and additions will make the book more useful than its predecessor and that the new format will prove more convenient.

Introduction
Role of Music in the Church ____________________________
From the early days of the Church, music has been integral to the worship of God. Music gives solemnity, beauty, joy, and enthusiasm to the worship of the community. It imparts a sense of unity and sets an appropriate tone for a particular celebration. It is an effective evangelistic tool. It nourishes and strengthens faith and assists worshipers in expressing and sharing their faith. It heightens texts so that they speak more fully and more cogently. It highlights the basic structure of the rites. It expresses and communicates feelings and meanings which cannot be put into words. As Messiaen expressed it, The joy of music is that it can go beyond words-which are too precise. Music can express what there is in the soul. * Music however must not dominate the liturgy; all elements of liturgy must work in harmony. Music, and the other arts, including speech, serve together in the liturgical action.
