Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 Love is not a physical entity, and yet it is very real. In order to know if there is true love in a particular situation, you need evidence. And being the skeptic that I am, I needed fairly strong evidence.
#2 The most common question Christians get is how they can know there is a God. The Christian answer is that God is not a material thing, and therefore cannot be seen, heard, or touched.
#3 God is real and active in our world, and we can testify to that fact. He has forgiven us and turned our lives around, and he speaks to us, guides us, redirects us, and rebukes us when we need it.
#4 There are many ways to evidence God’s existence, and we can share those with others. We can point to the effects of the invisible God in our world by using examples that everyone can access.

#1

Love is not a physical entity, and yet it is very real. In order to know if there is true love in a particular situation, you need evidence. And being the skeptic that I am, I needed fairly strong evidence.

#2

The most common question Christians get is how they can know there is a God. The Christian answer is that God is not a material thing, and therefore cannot be seen, heard, or touched.

#3

God is real and active in our world, and we can testify to that fact. He has forgiven us and turned our lives around, and he speaks to us, guides us, redirects us, and rebukes us when we need it.

#4

There are many ways to evidence God’s existence, and we can share those with others. We can point to the effects of the invisible God in our world by using examples that everyone can access.

#5

The universe had a beginning, and this was proven by the Hubble Space Telescope. If the universe had a beginning, it must have a cause for its existence. But the cause must be beyond the universe, since the universe is defined as time, space, matter, and physical energy.

#6

The Big Bang is a compelling scientific description of the biblical doctrine of creation ex nihilo, out of nothing. It sounds like an awfully compelling explanation of God’s creation of the universe.

#7

The universe had a beginning, which means it needed a cause. The cause of the universe is the immaterial, eternal God of the universe, who had no beginning and who therefore does not have or need a cause.

#8

The more I learn about the world, the more amazed I am at its beauty and complexity. The laws and physical constants that govern all the matter in the universe seem to be precisely balanced and tuned for life to exist.

#9

The fact that our universe has the correct parameters and constants is evidence that it was created by a divine designer. There are at least two dozen characteristics of a planet that are necessary for it to support life, and each of these factors must occur in the right place at the right time with respect to the same planet for complex life to be possible there.

#10

The fine-tuning of the universe is evidence of an incredibly intelligent designer, and it points to a morally good God who cares about good versus evil, right versus wrong.

#11

The problem of good is a major challenge for atheism. Within the atheist view, there is no way to explain or justify objective moral values.

#12

The Christian view is that God exists as a transcendent, divine person who created the universe and everything in it. Goodness flows from God’s very nature, and moral values are not invented by human beings. They are discovered by human beings, but they are grounded in the very nature of a good, loving, personal God.

#13

The moral atheist is simply left hanging in midair on this issue, without any solid footing. Christians, on the other hand, have a rock solid foundation on which to build their beliefs and live their lives.

#14

God exists because the universe had a beginning, it is fine-tuned with astounding just-so precision, and there are objective moral standards in the world. Therefore, there must be a divine moral lawgiver.

#15

It’s important to listen to your friends who don’t believe in God. Ask them questions, and be patient with them as they explain their beliefs. Remember that love draws people, and disagreement can drive them away.

#16

The evidence for God is presented in this chapter. It has strengthened my faith, and I believe that it could strengthen the faith of others if they were to consider it.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The question of where life came from is still unanswered by evolution. The theory implies that all species would eventually trace back to one original ancestor, but how that being first came to life was beyond the scope of Darwin’s focus.

#2

The question of whether examples of microevolution provide evidence for Darwin’s grand scheme of macroevolution, which states that species gradually grow into other species, is one of the great challenges to his theory. Most of the evidence offered for evolution is actually just evidence for microevolution, which everyone agrees happens.

#3

The theory of evolution cannot explain where life came from in the first place, the ingredients it would consist of, or the information that makes all organic life possible.

#4

The idea that everything in the universe came into existence by chance is a huge leap. It’s like saying, In the beginning. . the stuff was already here. And the stuff rattled around, bumping into itself, and over eons of time, it eventually got its act together and created life.
