The Muslim world in ancient times reached from Spain to India. How did people live then? What did they do? Let’s find out!

The Islamic Empire
Muhammad, a merchant in Arabia, founded a new religion, Islam, in 610 CE. What he taught inspired and unified the Arab world, and soon Arab kingdoms were succeeding against their neighbors. By 750, Muslims, those who follow Islam, had conquered an area from southern Spain to Afghanistan.

Muslim influence spread both by armies and by trade. At the time the two other great empires, the Byzantine in eastern Europe and the Sassanid in what is now Iran, were fighting each other and could not hold back the Muslim advance. The Baby Professor book, The Byzantine Empire, can help you learn about one of the other great empires of this period.

Life at home
As in most places and times, life was different for rich families and poor families. In the Islamic Empire, poor people lived in huts made of mud bricks or in tents, but the rich lived in large homes.
