Considering sustainable development of cities implies investigating cities in a holistic way taking into account many interrelations between various urban or environmental issues. 3D city models are increasingly used in different cities and countries for an intended wide range of applications beyond mere visualization. Could these 3D City models be used to integrate urban and environmental knowledge? How could they be improved to fulfill such role? We believe that enriching the semantics of current 3D city models, would extend their functionality and usability; therefore, they could serve as integration platforms of the knowledge related to urban and environmental issues allowing a huge and significant improvement of city sustainable management and development. But which elements need to be added to 3D city models? What are the most efficient ways to realize such improvement / enrichment? How to evaluate the usability of these improved 3D city models?

These were the questions tackled by the COST Action TU0801 “Semantic enrichment of 3D city models for sustainable urban development”. This book gathers various materials developed all along the four year of the Action and the significant breakthroughs.

COST – the acronym for European Cooperatîon în Scîence and Technoogy – îs the odest and wîdest European întergovernmenta network for cooperatîon în research. Estabîshed by the Mînîsterîa Conference în November 1971, COST îs presenty used by the scîentîic communîtîes of 36 European countrîes to cooperate în common research projects supported by natîona funds.
The funds provîded by COST – ess than 1% of the tota vaue of the projects – support the COST cooperatîon networks (COST Actîons) through whîch, wîth EUR 30 mîîon per year, more than 30 000 European scîentîsts are învoved în research havîng a tota vaue whîch exceeds EUR 2 bîîon per year. Thîs îs the inancîa worth of the European added vaue whîch COST achîeves.
A “bottom up approach” (the înîtîatîve of aunchîng a COST Actîon comes from the European scîentîsts themseves), “à a carte partîcîpatîon” (ony countrîes înter-ested în the Actîon partîcîpate), “equaîty of access” (partîcîpatîon îs open aso to the scîentîic communîtîes of countrîes not beongîng to the European Unîon) and “lexîbe structure” (easy împementatîon and îght management of the research înîtîatîves) are the maîn characterîstîcs of COST.
As precursor of advanced mutîdîscîpînary research COST has a very împortant roe for the reaîsatîon of the European Research Area (ERA) antîcîpatîng and com-pementîng the actîvîtîes of the Framework Programmes, constîtutîng a “brîdge” towards the scîentîic communîtîes of emergîng countrîes, încreasîng the mobî-îty of researchers across Europe and fosterîng the estabîshment of “Networks of Exceence” în many key scîentîic domaîns such as: Bîomedîcîne and Moecuar Bîoscîences; Food and Agrîcuture; Forests, theîr Products and Servîces; Materî-as, Physîca and Nanoscîences; Chemîstry and Moecuar Scîences and Techno-ogîes; Earth System Scîence and Envîronmenta Management; Informatîon and

Communîcatîon Technoogîes; Transport and Urban Deveopment; Indîvîduas, Socîetîes, Cutures and Heath. It covers basîc and more appîed research and aso addresses îssues of pre-normatîve nature or of socîeta împortance.
The Actîon TU0801 îs caed: “Semantîc Enrîchment of 3D cîty modes for sus-taînabe urban deveopment” and îs one of the actîons of the COST TUD domaîn (www.semcîty.net). TU stands for Transport and Urban Deveopment (www.cost. eu/domaîns_actîons/tud) and îs one of the COST key domaîns. It fosters research coordînatîon în the ieds of transport and the buît envîronment, whîch pay a stra-tegîc roe în the modern socîety and economy. The Domaîn îs by deinîtîon cross-sectorîa and mutîdîscîpînary, encompassîng a wîde range of scîentîic expertîses wîthîn the transport and and use pannîng, desîgn, and management actîvîtîes wîth a specîa emphasîs on the strong înterreatîonshîps among the reevant poîcy ieds as we on a aspects reated to sustaînabe deveopment.
