his book comes out of several decades on the water. Much of this time T has been spent with family, friends, mentors, and heroes of mine, all of whom have shared their knowledge and observations. Their support over the years has meant so much to me. There are many who deserve special mention. My grandfather, father, and uncle were all longtime guides and outfitters in the Greater Yellowstone area. They introduced me to fly fish ing at a very young age (perhaps too young), and they taught me to pay attention to everything. My brother Richard and cousin Tressa have been fishing compan ions of mine since I was in elementary school. Both guided for a number of years and could pick up on things happening on the water that I was oblivious to. We still get to fish together every year, and I continue to learn from them. Flyfishing writers Paul Bruun, Scott Sanchez, and Bruce Staples have shared their passion for the craft, as well as a ton of tidbits that have made the process of writing a book a little easier. All three are heroes of mine. Those times I have had over the years to sit down and talk with them have been among the most cherished moments of my life. A number of smart and influential individuals in the sport of fly fishing have shared their experiences with me. Much of what I include in this book is inspired by my discussions with them. These individuals
include Carter Andrews, Tim Brune, JeanWilliams Bruun, Ken Burk holder, Darren Calhoun, Jeff Currier, Mike Dawes, Mike Dawkins, Will Dornan, Kelly Galloup, and Craig Mathews. Being on the water guiding or fishing close to two hundred days a year gives me ample opportunity to interact with fellow guides. Theyare the true sentinels of the water and the ones whom I learn the most from year in and year out. Those from whom I have gained the mostknowledge include Kevin Brazell, Matt Breuer, Dean Burton, Josh Cohn,Ed Emery, Kurt Hamby, Jeff Hanson, Josh Heileson, Max Mamaev,Shannon McCormick, Steve Mock, Jaason Pruitt, Jim Reetz, Keith Smith, Scott Smith, Patrick Straub, Sue Talbot, Anya Tobie, Oliver White, BennyWilson, and Trevor Wine. Lastly, I would like to thank the editing team at Graphic Arts Books for their patience, enthusiasm, and thorough attention to detail with this project. Doug Pfeiffer, Kathy Howard, and Vicki Knapton are amongst the best in the business. Thanks for all your hard work.
INTRODUCTION
ly fishing is a game full of ancillary components. Studying them F allows us to become better at catching fish as well as learn more about the natural world. Entomology is a prime example. Studying insects, be they terrestrials or waterborne, can assist anglers in determining what patterns to use during a certain part of the day or season, what water types to target, and how best to fish and present the fly. But entomology
Understanding the vast components of fly fishing, from holding water and trout behavior to entomology and external factors, makes all of us better anglers.
also gives fly fishers the chance to learn much more about the ecology of streams and lakes. This kind of synergy exists in fly fishing just as much as it exists in other outdoor sports like skiing, surfing, or kayaking. In fact, this is synergy at its best—we become better anglers by learning more about the waters we fish, and we learn more about the waters we fish by becoming more knowledgeable anglers. The amount of knowledge a fly fisher can absorb is easily illus trated through a review of videos, flyfishing magazines, and angling websites. Dig deep into these resources, and it is amazing what you will find. There will be topics such as the biology and behavioral traits of trout. You will also find articles and videos on hydrology and its influ ence on holding water for trout. You can also find gear and tackle oriented themes like rod and line technology, leader construction, and the design of watercraft used to stalk trout. And, of course, there is the everpresent subject of casting and the biomechanics behind this all important piece of fly fishing. The possibilities for greater knowledge are truly immense. Now consider the diversified nature of the sport as it exists today. Trout and the cool freshwater streams and lakes in which they live are at the heart of fly fishing and always will be. Yet fly fishers now have the everincreasing popularity of saltwater angling, fishing for warmwater species like bass and carp, and swinging flies to anadromous fish like steelhead, salmon, and searun brown trout. Stalking these game fish allows anglers to learn more about the sport and the various ecosystems in which we play. Those who primarily target trout can take particular aspects of saltwater, warmwater, and anadromous fishing and apply them to the freshwater streams and lakes they fish. Today, we not only use fly patterns from saltwater and searun angling to fish for trout, we also apply some of the tactics from these types of fishing when we are going after trout. Having intimate knowledge of these aspects of fly fishing not only makes us better fly fishers, it also make us smarter fishers. We have the ability to go into our favorite waters, or even waters we have never before fished, better equipped to deal with the task of catching more and bigger trout. Our confidence can reach offthechart levels.
Many strategies, tactics, and patterns used in saltwater and anadromous fly fishing can be applied to trout. Having experience with the diverse aspects of the sport can take your angling to a whole new level.
