Description

There are many benefits to frugal living and minimalism. The first is that it helps to keep people from getting deep into debt. Many consumers make the mistake of living well beyond their means. When a person takes on a large debt burden, they are not financially independent. This can hurt one's chances of maintaining a good credit score. Minimalism helps to ensure that people have the essentials that they need and that no matter what happens, people will be provided for.

How to Save Money and Live On a Budget
By:Angela Pierce
Introduction

Being frugal is the act of being practical and wise when it comes to using various resources like money, food, time and it is usually done through waste avoidance and not indulging in too much luxury or extravagance. In other words, being frugal involves restraining or using of resources properly and with moderation for whatever goals set by a person. Being frugal has several advantages. One, the frugal person will be free from debts since he or she will be able to avoid them through right management and use of monetary resources. Two, the frugal person is able to save money so that there will be money to take out in case of emergencies. The person no longer has to borrow from other people or from the bank. Three, the frugal person will be able to avoid wasted resources whether food, money, time clothing, etc. This is because frugal living means being careful on how to spend these resources and making sure that the things he or she buys are really worthy of his or her time, money or is really useful for a practical period of time.

Now, if you are used to living in extravagance, it could be challenging for you to start living frugally. But considering the economic status nowadays, it is a must to save money and live frugally from now on. This book will give you various tips on how to start living in frugality.

1. INCREASE SAVINGS AND REDUCE EXPENSES

Your savings should be more than how much you spend. You can do this if you:

Don’t use up all your salary . When your salary arrives, do not spend them all in one day. Make sure you have set aside payment for important things first before you spend for other less important things. In fact, make sure you are setting aside a few percent for savings.

Do not spend more than what you earn . Be wary of how much you are earning in a month and make sure that you are only spending less than what you earn.

Open a bank account or get a piggy bank . Extra money from your salary should be saved in piggy banks or bank accounts. These will be your savings and as time passes, it will grow. These savings are money that shouldn’t be spent as they are reserved for more important purposes.

Invest. To increase savings, invest your money whether on business, stock markets, etc. These will double the money you have, thereby increasing your savings. Just make sure that you are investing in a legitimate type of investment and you seek professional help so that your investment is guaranteed to reap great returns.

Cut out unnecessary monthly bills . If you have a cell phone and you use it most of the time when making calls as well as if you are not really at home most of the time, you can cut off your landline to save money. This goes to other unnecessary bills like cable TV, etc. especially if you don’t really use them and can only increase expenses. This also goes to using cell phones. If you are mostly at home and you have a landline, cut out on monthly cell phone plans to reduce expenses.

Conserve energy. While you cannot really cut out electricity bills because it is a basic need, you can save money and reduce electricity expenses if you conserve energy. For instance, do not turn the TV on the whole day if nobody’s watching. Do not turn on the air conditioner the whole day especially if it is not really hot or cold.

Always apply maintenance on your appliances and other properties . This goes to your TV sets, your air conditioner, your car, your house, your plumbing, your furniture, etc. This means always check their condition and apply the necessary maintenance and enhancement they need in order to prevent them from being damaged or ruined. When you apply maintenance on these properties, you are saving them from acquiring worst damages that could mean costly repairs. Thereby, when you apply maintenance you are also saving money and reducing expenses.

2. BE A WISE SHOPPPER/BUYER

This refers to being mindful of your buying attitude and buying decisions. To be a wise shopper/buyer:

Look for bargains and discounts . Bargains and discounts are best deals when shopping because they give you the chance to buy items at a cheaper price and allow you to save money. Bargains allow you to make a deal with the price of an item with the seller, allowing you to save money as well.

Avoid shopping online on impulse . Shopping online is truly a temptation that leads shoppers and buyers to shop on impulse because of the low prices and convenience. While you can save when you shop online, do not use this fact to just decide to buy something online even if you don’t need it just for the fun of it. This could lead to wasted money. It always pays when you shop online wisely as well.

Shop mostly for your needs instead of wants . You can be a wise buyer, save money and live frugally if you know the right way to buy such as buying your needs first instead of wants. If you prioritize your wants first instead of your needs, you will have to spend more money to buy your needs again since needs are something that you must really spend money for. You can live well even if your wants are not met for the meantime but it would be a challenge to live well if your needs are not met.

Don’t shop when you are hungry . When shopping for groceries, your mind would be clouded from buying only the things you need if you are hungry. There is a higher chance that you will indulge in buying lots of stuff especially foods because you are hungry and craving. This will lead you to spend more.

Buy reasonably-priced gifts . If you are going to give gifts to your family and friends for an occasion, you can be a wise shopper and giver too by buying appropriate gifts with reasonable prices. In fact, there are lots of gift items that are not that expensive but they make perfect gifts for your recipient. Examples of these gift items are personalized items like mugs pens, etc. They are not that expensive but they are memorable and useful for your recipients.

Check the quality of the item before you buy . A wise buyer/shopper will always take his or her time to check the quality of the item he or she is buying before spending money. When you check the quality first, you ensure that the item will last longer with you so you won’t need costly replacements from time to time which could only add to expenses.

Do not shop with credit cards . To live frugally and save money, credit cards are a big no-no. These cards may be helpful in times of need but they can only drown you in debts. They are also great temptation to impulse buying as your mind is going to be set to buy anything no matter how much it cost because you can pay for it through credit cards. But when it comes to payment, you’ll be shocked with the amount of your credit card bills and this can really slice a big chunk on your savings.

3. BE FRUGAL WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD

This refers to your attitude when it comes to eating and food and the decisions you make regarding it. To live frugally and save money on food:

Cook your own food . If you don’t know how to cook, learn. As much as possible, cook your own food and avoid eating out. This will save you a lot of money compared to fast foods and restaurants which could cost higher and only increase your expenses.

Eat out practically and wisely . If in case the need to eat out cannot be avoided, you are not totally restricted to do so. However, in order to save money and live a frugal living, you should also be mindful of what you eat out and where you eat. To be wise and practical when eating out, do not go for expensive food and as much as possible, you don’t need to eat on expensive and luxurious restaurants.

Bring your own lunch to work . You can also save money and live frugally if you bring your own lunch to work instead of eating out during lunch or eating in your cafeteria. You can pack your leftover during breakfast and hav
