Description

Opportunities for Malawians to demonstrate their leadership skills were severely limited during the colonial period. Even the Missions, like Livingstonia and Blantyre, that provided a high level of education often frustrated their graduates by requiring them to work under European supervision on an indefinite basis. This study shows how some early Malawian church leaders took advantage of an unexpected opportunity that arose during the First World War. European missionaries were not allowed to enter Tanzania, but African staff were permitted to cross the border to help the Tanzanian churches to regroup after the devastation caused by the war. For such remarkable figures as Yoram Mphande, George Nyasulu and Jones and Catherine Chikoga, this was a chance to show their mettle.

Luviri Press loves the monograph, and it is not afraid of big books, but there are some8mes solid studies published somewhere that have not found their way into the monograph world. Maybe they were published years ago in a journal that is now difficult to obtain, or they were published in an academic anthology, where they can easily be overlooked. Luviri Press wants to give such ar8cles a new life of accessibility and usefulness. If the authors are s8ll in reach, they will be given the chance to update informa8on, and Luviri Press will relate the text to current scholarship and publica8ons. This will not make them a monograph, but, small as they are, they should have monograph quality.
In addi8on, Luviri Press will publish as occasional papers yet unpublished research by established and upcoming scholars. Texts by established scholars will be edited, while those of upcoming scholars will be edited and fully peer reviewed.
