ISABELLE, 29, nurse from
Bury St Edmunds, England, UK
I never use taxis because I live in a city with good public transport. I take the
bus every day. The bus stop is outside my house, and I only have a fve-minute
walk to go to work at my destination. We have a car so we never hire cars.
PAUL, 75, retired tram driver,
San Francisco, California, USA
I don’t use taxis because trams are free for me!
But I use vehicles for hire when I travel because
I don’t have a car. When I travel abroad, I rent a
car at the airport. It’s easier to use a car than to
use public transport in a foreign city.
CHRISTINE, 47, receptionist from
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
I live in the suburbs, so a car is a necessity.
The trains and buses are not reliable here.
I have never used a taxi, but last year, I rented
a truck. We moved to a new house and we
needed a big truck for our furniture. It was
expensive but necessary.

HELEN, 52, insurance broker from Dublin, Ireland
When I lived in France 10 years ago,
I had cancer. A taxi picked me up every
day at home and took me to the hospital
for my treatment. It was very practical for
my husband and me. I have fond
memories of the taxi drivers, who
were friendly and kind.
MATTHEW, 36, banker from New York City, New York, USA
Most people in New York don’t have a car
because there are so many different types
of public transport here. It’s very practical.
Gas and insurance are expensive, and
it’s diffcult to fnd parking in the city.
So, I take a taxi every day. It’s part
of New York culture!
SIMON, 19, student from Montreal,
Quebec, Canada
We hired a vehicle when I started university.
I’m studying far from home and I needed
furniture for my studio. We used a small
truck from a vehicle renting company. I put
a fridge, bed, wardrobe, oven and all my
clothes into that truck! My dad let me drive
it – it was cool!
