Description

Black and White is a book of 32 evocative images of political conflict and confrontations in the streets taken by Howard Epstein when he was a photographer for Liberation News Service.

The collection of images is a visceral flashback to the political turmoil of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Epstein’s photographs will resonate both for people who lived through those struggles and those organizing and protesting today.

FOREWORD KEN LIGHT

We were the Fifth Estate: a group of radicals, revolutionaries, and dissidents; a collective of dedicated young people who supplied news articles and photographs to underground and community newspapers, radio stations, and political organizations. Founded in 1967, we were the Liberation News Service (LNS), a New Left alternative to the mainstream media.
If you weren t around in the 60s, you probably never heard of The Great Speckled Bird, The Old Mole, The Chicago Seed, The L.A. Free Press, The Berkeley Barb, The Guardian, The Austin Rag, Akwesasne Notes, Off Our Backs, Space City, and The Black Panther News, or maybe not even Liberation News Service. There were well over 600 underground newspapers served by LNS and Howie Epstein was in the thick of it. I mean he was really in the thick of it.
Much of his life during this era was spent working at the Liberation News Service office on the upper West Side of New York City, a few blocks from Columbia University, where LNS collective members each made 25 a week and enjoyed free communal meals.
