Conversation! Lots and lots of conversation. It’s not a secret
that if you want to learn a language, you must speak it. An hour
of authentic conversation with real people is better than lessons
in a classroom. I learnt French by living in France and speaking
French every day.
LOUISE, 20, student from Cape Town, South Africa
I think it’s important to know a lot of vocabulary. Your grammar
can be good but if you don’t have the vocabulary to make a sentence,
you can’t communicate. A good way of learning vocabulary is reading
graded readers. You forget you’re learning when you read a good
book.
BENJAMIN, 50, baker from Memphis, Tennessee, USA
Don’t worry if you make mistakes! Sometimes, people don’t
speak because they are scared of making mistakes. You will
make mistakes when you learn a new language, but nobody
will mock you if you try. Most people are happy to help you if
you can’t speak a language very well.

Don’t learn a foreign language in a group.
Choose private, individual lessons with
a good teacher. People in a group never
have the same level. There is always
someone who is too slow or someone
who is too fast. Individual lessons are
more expensive but they are worth it.
JOANNE, 39, occupational therapist from Dublin, Ireland
I recommend immersion. When you are in a foreign country with people
who don’t speak English, you learn very quickly. You will not have a choice.
I worked in a ski resort in Italy 21 years ago and I learnt Italian in three
months because no one spoke English to me.
JON, 62, psychologist from Milton Keynes,
England, UK
Do activities that you enjoy while learning a foreign
language. Read books in the language if you like
reading. Watch flms or TV series in the language
if you like them. Travel to the country. People learn
quickly when they are having fun. When you are
bored, you fall asleep!
