PREFACE
 Preface
This book is intended to be used for a university freshman course usually called “English 2”, given to students as an obligatory university requirement. The book contains fourteen units, one for each week of the semester if possible. If this is not possible for some reason, the instructor can always select whatever units that suit his students’ level or interest. To add, this book can be used for reading and comprehension courses.
Each unit contains one passage divided into three parts: two parts for reading comprehension and one part for listening comprehension. Each passage is followed by exercises on eight language areas: reading, listening, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, pronunciation, and writing. Each unit has sixteen exercises: Exercise 1 and Exercise 2 on reading comprehension, Exercise 3 on listening comprehension, Exercises 4-6 on vocabulary, Exercises 7-9 on grammar, Exercise 10 on punctuation, Exercises 11-13 on spelling, Exercises 14-15 on pronunciation, and finally Exercise 16 on writing.
This book is authored with these considerations in mind:
1.reading material level is selected to suit university The students in the Arab World, i.e., a level higher than the secondary-stage level.
2.The topics of the passages are made as varied as possible so as to suit the different majors of freshman students such as sciences, arts, and business.
3. The reading passage is divided into three parts to make comprehension easier. The focus each time will be on one part, instead of two or three parts. - 4 -

English Skills Two,MA, DA How to Use the Book How to Use the Book
To use this book efficiently, it is better to follow these recommendations:
1. Students are to read each part separately, and then they answer the comprehension questions on that part. In other words, they read Part 1, and then they do Exercise 1 immediately. Then they go to Part 2 and do Exercise 2.
2.for Part 3, the instructor is to read the part while his As students are listening to him. Then they do Exercise 3. This part is meant to be a listening practice. However, if this activity does not work with the students for some reason, the instructor may change Part 3 into reading comprehension.
3.exercises (4-6) are text-tied and do include Vocabulary different types of activities such as matching, synonyms, antonyms, derivation, suffixes, and prefixes.
4.Grammar exercises (7-9) review 42 grammatical patterns, three patterns in each unit, text-tied in most cases. Students are to write their answers in the given spaces.
5. Punctuation exercises in the book review all punctuation marks, graded and accumulated all through the book.
6. As for spelling, Exercise 11 usually gives a spelling rule, which needs some explanation before doing the exercise. Exercise 12 calls for spelling practice of a group of selected words. Exercise 13 is a dictation exercise based on one paragraph from the passage; here the instructor selects a paragraph and gives it as a dictation practice. - 6 -
English Skills Two,MA, DA How to Use the Book 7.for pronunciation, Exercise 14 usually gives a As pronunciation rule that needs to be discussed first before doing the drill. As for Exercise 15, it is usually a stress drill, where the instructor is advised to give the model first, and then students can repeat.
8.Finally, there is Exercise 16 on free writing. A paragraph is expected to be written freely or as a summary. Exercise 16 is text-tied, i.e., dependent on the passage. This exercise can be done at home and later discussed in class. There is nothing obligatory here; the instructor is to use his discretion and experienced judgment. This exercise may be done or not, depending on the time available, the students’ level, and their motivation.

English Skills Two,MA, DA UNIT 1 EFFICIENT STUDYING
 Unit 1
(1) When you begin to study a new subject, try to keep an open mind. Do not start by thinking the subject isboringor difficult. Most of all, do not fall behind in your preparation, reading, class work, and homework. When you fail to learn one point of information, all of the following information that depends on it will not be clear to you. Because you do not understand, you will lose whatever interest you may have started with. To maintain interest andconcentration, study regularly and do not be afraid to ask questions or seek help for anything which you do not understand.

A distraction is something, such as a sudden noise, or someone, such as an unexpected visitor, that takes your attention away from what you are doing. You have no control over some distractions, but you can control others. You caneliminatesome distractions by choosing your place and time of study carefully. You can eliminate other distractions by keeping in good health. A tired feeling which results from a poor diet or from staying up too late makes it difficult to concentrate. If your eyes tire easily, or if you have headaches after concentrated reading, it may mean that you should have your eyes examined. Yourphysical health is important to good study habits.
