Whatyou need:
Two nonpermanent felttip pens, one green and one black
One coffee filter or a sheet of filter paper
Some kitchen roll
What you do:
Two pencils
A pair of scissors
A roll of sticky tape
Two transparent plastic glasses (approx. 10 cm high)
1. Cut two strips(1)of filter paper 10 cm by 2 cm.
2. With a pencil, draw a line across the strip at 1 cm from one end. This end is now the bottom(2).
3. With the green felttip pen, draw a spot(3)of about 2 mm in diametre above(4)the line.
4. Leave to dry(5)for 10 seconds.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to make sure there is plenty of ink(6).
6. Pour(7)about 1 cm of water into one of the glasses.
7. With a piece of sticky tape, fix the top of the strip of filter paper to a pencil.
8. Place the pencil with its strip of filter paper across the middle of the glass. Be careful not to touch the sides of the glass. The bottom of the strip must touch the water. And now, observe what happens. If you want to know the explanation, look at the bottom of this page.
9. If you want to keep your experiment(8), dry the strip of filter paper by placing it on some sheets of kitchen roll.
10. Why not try to do this experiment with a black felttip pen? You can see at least three different colours (red,greenand blue).
