Isaac’s birth
Sarah had been hoping for so long and had prayed to have a child.
Ishmael was not the son she hoped and this led to arguments with her servant, Agar. God visited Sarah one day, as he promised, at the Oak of Mamre, one year previously. He kept his promise. Sarah conceived and gave birth to a child. Abraham named him Isaac and had him circumcised when he was eight-days old, as God had ordered. Abraham’s and Sarah’s hearts brimmed with love and joy. Agar and Ishmael were jealous of Isaac. Sarah often fought with Agar and asked Abraham to send them away. Abraham felt disappointed, as he loved his first-born son Ishmael very much. God told Abraham that he should listen to his wife Sarah and that he would always protect Ishmael and his mother. He added:
“Isaac will give you descendants who will perpetuate your name and from your servant’s son, I will create a great nation, as he too has your blood!”
Abraham got up early, took some bread and some water and gave it to Agar as he put the child on her shoulder. He sent them away, heavy-hearted. Agar went off into the desert with her son Ishmael. When their bread and water supplies ran out, they thought that they would die. They started crying with despair. God heard Ishmael’s cries and told Agar:
“Do not fear, I heard the cries of the child where he was. Stand up. Lift the child and hold him tight, I will make a great nation from his blood!”
Agar and Ishmael drank from a well and filled their bota bag with water.
God was by Ishmael’s side as he grew up in the desert and became an archer. He married a local Egyptian woman and had many descendants.
Isaac grew up between Abraham and Sarah, always attentive to the word of God. Isaac learned to listen to God and to respect him.
