Foreword
Since 2008, the Children’s Book Project for Tanzania (CBP) has been supporting novel writing and publishing in English with the aim of promoting the learning of English for youth in upper primary and Secondary schools. In a country where English is not widely used outside the classroom, efforts need to be in place to support its acquisition through intensive and extensive reading.
The Burt Award for Africa Literature aims at producing books which show the local situation, depicting familiar environments in order to arouse the interest and enthusiasm of the reader. In this way, students can develop the habit of reading and enjoying interesting stories while improving their English skills and therefore their ability to learn other subjects taught in English. It is indeed the expectation of the project that the Burt Award for African Literature will contribute to success in other subjects.
CBP wishes to thank the panel of judges, for their dedication and integrity, and CODE and Mr. Burt for broaching and supporting the project and all our stakeholders, including writers, publishers, librarians, teachers and students. It is their participation in various ways that has made the project a success.

Prologue
A girl in a village rushed to a nearby stream to get water for her mother. The evening scent of the wild ylang ylang flowers filled the air. The little girl walked as fast as her fair legs could carry her. She could hear the stream before she set eyes on the gushing water. It was not safe to be out at this time. She had come out later than usual. Her mother always warned her not to go out too late to fetch water as it was dangerous, especially for her. Her pale skin and light eyes were mistakenly considered valuable for superstitious use. She was always on high alert.
Insects chirped. Trees swayed in the wind. A car drove by her and stopped suddenly. A giant of a man stepped out. She froze. Her clay pot fell from her hands and crashed into pieces. The sound scared the birds in a nearby tree. The man ran forward and snatched her, pushing her into the backseat forcefully. No one was there to witness the abduction. This is what the little girl’s mother was scared of. And now it had happened.
