Description

Son of the Native Soil is a work whose quiet maturity glows in both subject and style. Here, love heals but the force of hate is very real. The hero, Lucas Achamba, by charisma and love undertakes to unite Dudum clan which politicking and egotism have split. His quick success stirs bitter rivalry and heartless cruelty that decide his fate. Nature is jumpy and even hysterical at this, and Ambanasom exposes it with fine evocative mastery. The style is refined and honeyed by sonal devices and visual tropes that half conceal subtle slashes at human foibles.

Preface to the Third Edition he author of a novel published less than a decade ago T owes the reading public a little explanation when the text is already running into its third edition. First published by Patron Publishing House, Bamenda, in 1999,Son of the Native Soil was published in its revised form in 2006 by Unique Printers, Bamenda. Some may well wonder what event of ‘earthquake’ proportion could have warranted another edition so soon in 2007. The reason is simple. When in 2006 the Cameroon G.C.E Board chosethe NativeSon of Soilthe new African literature text for the Ordinary Level as Examination, some ill-intentioned and grubby Cameroonians thought an opportunity had come for them to make easy money. They began to reap where they had not sown. Before I had even received my own official consignment of the books, illegal copies of the revised edition were already in circulation in the country, and selling below the market price, inflicting on me untold psychological pain and causing me a great deal of material and financial losses as I struggled, through cumbersome litigation and the narration of the law, to combat the illegal sale of my book. The third edition is thus motivated by my desire to protect the quality of the consumers’ product and to make its price more affordable than before. I have also availed myself of the opportunity of a third edition to expunge from the text some detectable blemishes. But, above all, the third edition has been prompted by the wish to provide the text with a good and much-needed introduction, generously furnished here by Edward A. Ayugho, the current President of ELTS North West and Vice-President of CAMELTA. This third edition can therefore enjoy the status of the authoritative, definitive version of the text.
