Top Attraction 2

Pamukkale. The solidified mineral-rich “waterfalls” of the pale travertine terraces are a cliché of Turkish tourism, but unmissable nonetheless; the extensive remains of Roman Hierapolis up top are an added bonus. For more information, click here .

Best Ancient Monuments

Trajan Temple, Pergamon . German archaeologists have re-erected columns and architraves in partial atonement for a compatriot’s abduction of the nearby Zeus altar reliefs. For more information, click here .
Library of Celsus , Ephesus. Effectively the logo of the site, this 2nd-century AD endowment with its elaborate façade has been assiduously restored by Austrian excavators. For more information, click here .
Tetrapylon Gate, Aphrodisias . An astonishing elaborate structure just to mark the intersection of two Roman streets, this cluster of columns supports finely worked pediments. For more information, click here .
The Theatre, Aspendos . Roman imperial structure in almost as good condition as when new – and accordingly a supremely atmospheric festival venue. For more information, click here .
Zeus temple, Aizanoi . With standing walls and columns, the most complete of three Zeus temples in Anatolia, a Corinthian affair funded by Emperor Hadrian. For more information, click here .
Monumental gates, Boğazkale . Massive gates flanked by relief carvings punctuate the incredible 6km (4 miles) of walls enclosing this capital of the once-mighty Hittite empire. For more information, click here .

Trajan Temple at Pergamon.

St Peter’s , Bodrum . Once a main stronghold of the crusading Knights of St John, now well restored and home to several worthwhile museums. For more information, click here .
Anamur ( Mamure Kalesi ). Among the most romantically sited castles in Turkey, a huge Armenian-built seaside affair with its toes in the sand. For more information, click here .
Korykos and Kız Kalesi . Not-quite-twin castles, built by the Byzantines and local Armenian kings: one on land, the other facing it on an islet. For more information, click here .
İshak Paşa Sarayı , Doğubeyazıt . More fortified pleasure-palace than castle, this engaging pastiche of every conceivable indigenous Anatolian style seems a mirage in this bleak landscape. For more information, click here .
Hoşap , Hakkâri . Fairytale castle on a crag, t
