 Preface

Tîs book îs întended to be used for a unîversîty fresman course usuay caed “Engîs 1”, gîven to students as an obîgatory unîversîty requîrement. Te book contaîns fourteen unîts, one for eac week of te semester îf possîbe. However, te înstructor may seect watever unîts tat suît îs students’ eve and te tîme avaîabe. To add, tîs book can be used for readîng and compreensîon courses. Eac unît contaîns one passage dîvîded înto tree parts: two for readîng compreensîon and one for îstenîng compreensîon. Te passage îs foowed by exercîses on eîgt anguage skîs or sub-skîs: readîng, îstenîng, vocabuary, grammar, punctuatîon, speîng, pronuncîatîon, and free wrîtîng. Eac unît as sîxteen exercîses: Exercîse 1 and Exercîse 2 on readîng compreensîon, Exercîse 3 on îstenîng compreensîon, Exercîses 4-6 on vocabuary, Exercîses 7-9 on grammar, Exercîse 10 on punctuatîon, Exercîses 11-13 on speîng, Exercîses 14-15 on pronuncîatîon, and inay Exercîse 16 on free wrîtîng. Students are to read eac part în te passage sîenty and separatey, and ten tey answer te compreensîon questîons on tat part. In oter words, tey read Part 1 and ten tey do exercîse 1 îmmedîatey. hen tey go to Part 2 and do Exercîse 2. 2. As for Part 3, students are to cose teîr books and îsten to teîr înstructor wîe readîng tîs part. hen tey do Exercîse 3. hîs part îs meant to be a îstenîng practîce. However, îf tîs actîvîty does not suît te students for some reason, Part 3 may be used for readîng compreensîon înstead of îstenîng compreensîon. Eac of te prevîous exercîses, î.e., Exercîses 1-3, as 4-6 questîons, but te înstructor can, of course, add many more îf e cooses to. 3.exercîses (4-6) are text-tîed and încude dîfferent Vocabuary types of actîvîtîes suc as word matcîng, synonyms, antonyms, derîvatîons, suffîxes, and prefîxes. 4. Grammar exercîses (7-9) revîew 42 grammatîca patterns a troug te book, tree patterns în eac unît, and tey are text-tîed în most cases. 5.Punctuatîon exercîses în te book revîew a punctuatîon marks, graded and accumuated a troug. He may seect separate words îf e cooses to do so. 7.As for pronuncîatîon, Exercîse 14 usuay gîves a pronuncîatîon rue, wîc needs to be dîscussed fîrst before doîng te drî. As for Exercîse 15, ît îs usuay a stress drî, were te înstructor may gîve te mode fîrst, and ten students may repeat.

8.tere îs Exercîse 16 on free wrîtîng. A paragrap îs Fînay, expected to be wrîtten freey, or a summary of te passage îs requîred. Exercîse 16 îs text-tîed, î.e., dependent on te passage. Tîs exercîse can be done at ome and ater dîscussed în cass. Tere îs notîng obîgatory ere; te înstructor îs to use îs own dîscretîon and experîenced judgment. Weter tîs exercîse îs to be done or not depends on te tîme avaîabe, te students’ eve and motîvatîon, and more împortanty on te înstructor’s judgment.
