PART 1: DISCOVERING THE KEYS OF TIME

Chapter 1 - The Value of Bible chronology

This book is written to reveal to you the KEYS, which unlock God’s revelation of TIME. The Bible is full of chronological information, but without these KEYS you will not be able to put it all together properly to see the whole picture. But as you read, you will discover how God has left us a perfect and precise record of His dealings with mankind in the past, present and future, so we might see His glory and know where we stand in His purposes.
Bible Chronology is the study of how God has worked and revealed Himself in TIME and it has great value for us, as it is part of God’s revelation to us. As Paul affirms in 2 Timothy 3:16: “ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God ... and is profitable to thoroughly furnish a man for good works.” This includes God’s revelation of TIME. Understanding this will give you a framework for comprehending the whole of Bible History, a clearer vision of how the future will unfold (Bible Prophecy), and a firm grasp of the special time in which we live, shortly before the Return of Christ. Jesus rebuked the people of His time for failing to DISCERN the time they were living in (Luke 12:54-56; Matthew 16:2, 3). It is urgent that we discern the time in which we live so that we might fulfil God’s specific purpose for our generation, and not fail to miss out on what He is doing in the earth.
The numbers, dates, feasts, times and seasons given in the Bible give us much revelation about God and how He works in time. All this confirms that He is a God of peace (order, harmony), not of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). The Lord of Time is not making it up as He goes along. Rather He has ordered the flow of time according to His SOVEREIGN GRACE. He is: “working ALL
THINGS according to the counsel of His WILL” (Ephesians 1:11). The theme of the Bible is God’s Plan of Redemption. God has revealed Himself in HISTORY, in TIME. His progressive revelation of Himself and His Plan of Salvation unfolds as history marches on. His Divine Interventions are according to His TIMETABLE. Now CHRONOLOGY is the BACKBONE of HISTORY.
Therefore history cannot be fully understood or appreciated until it is set in its context - the correct framework of time. Therefore understanding the timings of God will increase your understanding of the Bible and your appreciation of God’s Plan, making your knowledge more exact.
Since Bible Chronology is an essential part of the revelation of God’s Plan of Redemption, we should expect the Bible’s information on time to be perfect, accurate and complete. Remember that numbers are used by both God and man to measure and describe exact quantities. We proceed on the assumption 7
that the Bible’s information is literally accurate to the degree of accuracy stated, and that God’s revelation is complete, so any gaps can be discerned by principles and patterns revealed elsewhere in His Word, for God is always consistent . The resulting Chronology should demonstrate the truth of our assumptions, revealing His Glory and Sovereignty.
Proverbs 25:2: “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” The Word of God is written in such a way that it is concealed from our natural understanding; you cannot grasp it with your mind alone, for it is spiritually discerned. He does not hide it from us, but for us, to search it out and discover its riches! As a spiritual revelation it is not just about number crunching. On the surface, there is not enough information given to construct a complete and accurate Bible Chronology, but we shall see that when the right spiritual principles (KEYS) are discerned, it is indeed possible to use them to put together God’s perfect record of time. God delights in us searching out His Word, and we should have pleasure in doing this: “The works of the LORD are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them” (Psalms 111:2).
We have detective work to do, to search out the clues and put it all together to create a full picture of Time. Some things are on the surface and other things are more hidden. We stand on the shoulders of a number of men of God who have searched out these things, and as we approach the End of the Age, God is bringing the revelation of the Bible’s perfect chronology to its completion.

Bible Chronology reveals God’s Sovereignty and Glory It reveals Him as the Lord of Time, the Eternal One outside of time. To Him all time is NOW. He knows the end from the beginning. He is the Alpha and Omega: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1–2).
