T he Bible is a huge book with amazing stories, big questions, and important clues for how you should live your life. But it was written a long time ago, and can seem really hard to understand. How do you get into the Bible so it can really speak to you? Let’s find out!
A world that is the same, but different
T he Bible is not one book, but a whole library. Parts of the Bible were written about three thousand years ago, and other parts are much newer. But even the newest parts, like the letters of Paul in the New Testament, are almost two thousand years old and come from a world and a culture very different from ours.
I n the centuries when the Bible was written, people:
Had to talk face to face with people, or write letters to them. There was nothing like telephones, television, or social media over the Internet.
Mainly worked with their hands, farming, fishing, building things, or in armies. The number of people who sat indoors all day at “desk jobs” was tiny.
Might be born, grow up, grow old, and die all in the same village or small area. Very few people traveled very far.
Thought it was normal to own slaves, and to have the right to sell or even kill a slave you owned.
